With ‘clear head’ and new contract, Tari Eason is more focused than ever

The 2025-26 season was a mental grind for Houston Rockets forward Tari Eason, who went through a prolonged shooting slump after the All-Star break. At one point, a team meeting was held to try and lift his spirits.

But Eason, 25, bounced back with a strong first-round playoff series against the Los Angeles Lakers. Then, in the offseason, he received a lucrative five-year contract extension.

Considering that, it seems the LSU product is entering his fifth NBA season with confidence and a more positive state of mind. At this week’s media day to open up training camp, Eason said of his summer:

This offseason, I worked on getting in shape, and my ball handling was a big one (point of emphasis). Those two things kind of go hand in hand, if you really focus on them.

My base and my shot, getting it up with more arc.

I’d say this offseason was the most diligent and the most focused I’ve ever been, as far as my attention to detail.

Later in the interview, Eason was asked to explain the reasons behind that newfound focus. The versatile 6-foot-8 forward offered this response:

To Eason’s point on health, he missed a combined 85 games in his second and third seasons. Most of that traced back to a recurring issue with his lower left leg.

Then, in the opening weeks of last season, Eason was sidelined for a month by an oblique strain.

But from mid-December onward, Eason was able to stay healthy, and he finished with 60 regular-season appearances for the first time since his rookie season (when he played in all 82 games).

Then, he had a strong showing in the playoffs, and the team rewarded him in the offseason with that new contract.

There were bumps along the way, but Eason seems to be in a good place entering 2026-27. And that should be good news for the Rockets, who rely on him as a key rotation player and as one of the team’s best defenders.
