STAUNTON — Maddox Perry birdied his first hole of the day Aug. 3 and went on to shoot a 74 at the first Shenandoah District golf match of the season at Gypsy Hill Park. The Wilson Memorial senior won low medalist honors for the day.
“Didn’t have many bogies,” Perry said. “Just stayed consistent.”
His efforts helped Wilson Memorial finish second as a team with a 337, behind Waynesboro’s winning total of 323.
Perry has been playing golf for about five years. In middle school, he went out to play a Par 3 course with his dad and hit the ball pretty well. He moved from that course to a regulation course at Ironwood, where he usually plays these days.
“It’s just soothing,” Perry said of the game. “Playing golf gets me in a good mindset.”
Perry has a goal of helping his team reach the regional tournament. He has learned by watching past Wilson golfing greats Jaxson Devereux and Chase Snyder. Now he wants to step up and help lead the team as far as he can.
“He is great for us in so many ways,” Wilson coach Whitt Coffey said of Perry. “For the guys to look at him and say, ‘That’s what I want to get to,’ is great for us.”
Waynesboro was led by sophomore Berkeley Gibb, who shot a 75 for second overall.
“They’ve been working their butts off all summer to get where we want to be,” said Waynesboro coach John Hull. “We’ve developed a competitive atmosphere where we compete against each other.”
Hull said the Little Giants have pretty high expectations this season. After making the regional tournament the past two years, the goal for Waynesboro is to make the state tournament this season.
All six of Waynesboro’s golfers who played shot 87 or lower — Gibb (75), Noah Haynes (81), Drew Matherly (82), Ian Priddy (85), Jack Blaylock (85) and Aiden Campbell (87)
“Our main focus is doing what we have to do here at these (matches) so we can take the whole team to states,” Hull said.
Riverheads finished third led by Hunter Campbell’s 79.
