The Red Sox‘s season featured a stunning turnaround and playoff appearance, but it ended in disappointing fashion. They fell to the Yankees in the wild-card round, scoring just two runs across two games against their AL East rival.
After falling to New York in Game 2, Willson Contreras expressed frustration with Boston’s approach.
“It’s not enough when you have talent, or you have data, or you have computers that are telling you what to do. This is baseball,” Contreras said. “The data is here to help us, but at the end of the day, you’re gonna need experience and veteran guys to win games.”
Red Sox fans became concerned about the status of the relationship between Contreras and the organization, but the All-Star first baseman has made it clear that both sides are on “the same page.” Contreras had a productive conversation with chief baseball officer Craig Breslow and manager Chad Tracy after Boston was eliminated.
“After you lose in the playoffs and get kicked out, you get frustrated,” Contreras told The Boston Globe’s Peter Abraham. “But it was nothing to take personal. I think we had a great meeting. It’s going to be good for next year. We’re on the same page, which is the most important thing.”
Contreras added that “things are in a good place,” and he is feeling much better physically after dealing with hamstring and hand injuries during the season.
Contreras, who led the Red Sox with a career-high 27 home runs and 81 RBIs, is signed through the 2027 season. His deal includes a club option for the 2028 campaign.
