It’s the second week of June. Here in New York City, just a stone’s throw from the site of next week’s U.S. Open, a high of 92 degrees fahrenheit is forecasted on Thursday. Safe to say, across much of the Northern Hemisphere, summer has arrived, but don’t tell that to golfers in St. Andrews, who watched The Old Course turn white before their very eyes following a wild storm on Tuesday.

If you don’t like the weather in Scotland, just wait a minute. The bizarre meteorological event was an unlucky break for many, forcing the cancellation of several tee times, but golfers like Griffin Smith (seen below) who were finishing up as the storm blew through got the surreal experience of a lifetime.

That’s a heck of a story to bore the grandkids with, but not everything was quite what it appeared. The white stuff was largely reported as “snow” across social media, but was in fact a layer of hail dumped by the passing storm. Still though, golfers were seen playing in pants and jackets with a layer of white blanketing The Home of Golf in June. Whether it was snow, tiny ice pellets or just the big man upstairs shaving his beard, I think we can all agree that this is one of the most bizarre golf weather events we’ve seen in a long time.
