Wild Horse Nine Ending Explained: Who Lives, Who Dies & What The Final Scene Means

Warning: The following contains spoilers for Wild Horse NineWild Horse Nine is Martin McDonagh’s sixth film and easily his most overly political. The film follows a pair of CIA agents on vacation to Easter Island. John Malkovich’s Chris, a veteran agent who has begun to feel the weight of his actions as his life draws to a close, has asked Sam Rockwell’s Lee to quickly put him down while on the trip.

However, an unexpected conspiracy and surprising friendship inspire a bit more fight in both agents, leading them to discover some pretty harsh truths about themselves and the world at large. It’s a compelling and emotionally complex film, with a very blunt message for the authoritarians in the world that comes across beautifully in its bloody climax.

Wild Horse Nine Kills Off Most Of Its Cast

Wild Horse Nine ends on a truly wild amount of death, with almost all of the central cast killed off in a thematically rich final confrontation. The end of Wild Horse Nine sees Lee, MJ, and Alicia follow Chris and the captive Monica to a largely open field. With no witnesses save the nearby stone heads, Alicia and her soldiers try to capture Monica – only for Chris to shoot the soldiers down.

Monica makes her escape, making sure to kill Alicia with her car. This suggests she’s taken Chris’ advice to kill authority figures that might otherwise seek to kill her. Meanwhile, a frustrated Lee casually kills MJ. The movie ends with Lee and Chris having a final conversation, where Chris gives Lee the intel MJ was after – which Lee can use to save his family after they were captured to force his compliance.

Once Chris gives the codeword, Lee kills him with a single shot to the head, fulfilling his promise to end Chris’ life so that he can go out without the prolonged suffering his cancer otherwise promised. The bloodbath is a perfectly bittersweet ending for the film, but it also speaks to the underlying moral of the film. Both Lee and Monica survive, disillusioned of any notion of a peaceful authority in their lives.

They also both refuse to play along with the authority figure’s orders and threats, giving them the chance to take down their would-be captors and killers. While every death in the climax is sudden, Chris gets to choose when his death happens. After a movie of wrestling with his bloody legacy, his final act to save his friends (both old and new) leads him to a much softer, kinder end.

Wild Horse Nine’s Kennedy Assassination Connection, Explained

An unexpected major thread in Wild Horse Nine is the CIA’s involvement in the assassination of John F. Kennedy. While that remains a conspiracy theory in the real world, Wild Horse Nine posits that it was indeed the agency’s doing, as part of their overall global “peacekeeping” efforts.

It’s portrayed as just one of many coups and acts of political violence that Chris has taken part in over the years, albeit one that peeled the mask off the United States and revealed just how harsh it could become, too. While Chris repeatedly denies having been the one to take the shot, he was apparently present for the assassination and tasked with disposing of the rifle.

This is also actually why MJ wants to ensure his death, as he fears that Chris’ dying musings for his memoir could expose the truth. Kennedy casts a long shadow over the film, representing the kind of hope that people like Monica believe in and fight for, only for people like the CIA to come in and wipe them all out.

While Chris notes dryly that the moral rot was always there in America, the death of Kennedy just exposed it for the world to see. It’s a reminder that the kind of imperialistic efforts that dictate so many regime changes in the 20th century can just as easily blow back on the people supposedly protected by those authority figures.

Lee is a loyal agent with a lot of bodies under his belt, but his family is kidnapped and has their lives threatened if he doesn’t go through with their mission. He’s just as vulnerable to the CIA’s casual cruelty as Monica, just like America can be torn asunder just as thoroughly as any other nation.

Wild Horse Nine‘s final scene sums up the entire moral throughline of the film. Having spent the movie reflecting on his life and his past deeds, Chris begins to feel genuinely remorseful for the way he’s helped change the world. He promises to stop lying to Monica, bluntly telling her the methods that will be used to dispose of her and her fellow activists.

Chris calls anyone in a uniform a threat and reflects on the ways he broke people even before they were killed. In the end, Chris admits that he wishes he had spent his life petting more horses rather than killing people, a simple admission that all his brutal work for the “greater good” just caused more pain and suffering.

The ending of the film leaves the fates of even Lee and Monica up in the air. Although Lee is able to frame it so that Chris was responsible for all the deaths, it’s unclear if the CIA will allow him and his family to live or if Monica will be able to escape Chile before the upcoming military coup.

Historically, there is still plenty of shady stuff for the CIA to do on behalf of an American public who will never know the secret cost to their freedoms. However, the movie makes it clear there is a moral victory to be had in recognizing the threat and refusing to be a part of it. Chris’ final musings underscore a more empathetic perspective – even if it can only be achieved by resisting authority.

The True Meaning of Wild Horse Nine

Wild Horse Nine is a melancholy film that relishes in the little moments of humanity. Everyone in the movie (save for Monica) is shown to be hiding something, whether it be personal demons or dangerous loyalties. All of these secrets are in the name of ensuring a supposedly positive goal. However, all of those efforts come at a cost that can never be repaid.

Wild Horse Nine is a movie that clearly has a very low opinion of imperialistic impulses, noting just how terrible the American actions across the world have been for countless innocent people. Chris’ somber admission of everything that will occur amid a military coup speaks to the movie’s blunt (and frustrated) perspective on so-called “peacekeeping” efforts.

All the conflict in the film is spurred on by people who demand others adhere to their orders and adjust to their worldviews. Whether you’re a student activist or the President of the United States, forces of the authorities will try to enforce that power any way they feel they have to if it means they can keep that power.

The key, in the eyes of Wild Horse Nine, is to hold fast and die on your feet if you have to. Whereas fear is a tool that can be stopped, friendship is shown to be the key towards redemption or freedom, with Lee and Monica both only surviving because of it. It reinforces an underlying theme of empathy over authority, giving the movie a strong moral core.
