Freida McFadden's 'The Housemaid' Stage Adaptation Announced

Freida McFadden has had no shortage of success, but 2026 has been especially fruitful for her.

The mystery author released a staggering four new books, all New York Times Bestsellers (The Witch, on October 6, The Divorce, on May 26, The Dinner Party on April 4, and Dear Debbie, on January 27). The Housemaid—the first film adaptation of McFadden’s work—made over $400 million at the box office upon its December 2025 release, then became an even bigger streaming hit.

At least six more adaptations of her novels are now in development, including a sequel to The Housemaid, film versions of The Teacher, The Tenant, The Surrogate Mother, and The Divorce, and a series adaptation of Dear Debbie. The last year has been so big for McFadden that she even revealed the true identity behind her pen name after 12 years of keeping it a secret.

Now, however, the queen of mystery thrillers is venturing into even newer territory: one of her bestselling novels is coming to London as a play.

The Freida McFadden Mystery Coming To London As A Stage Play

The Housemaid, a stage adaptation of McFadden’s 2022 novel, will premiere as a touring production in 2027, starting at Richmond Theatre in London.

Lionsgate, the studio behind the Housemaid films, will also produce this stage version. Playwright Bekah Brunstetter will write the script, while prolific West End director Matthew Dunster will direct. Both have experience developing major page-to-screen adaptations into stage productions: Brunstetter was Tony-nominated for her musical adaptation of Nicholas Sparks’ The Notebook, while Dunster recently directed The Hunger Games: On Stage.

While a straight play may not be the most expected avenue for adapting McFadden’s hit novels, mystery authors have a rich history with English theater. Agatha Christie wrote more than 15 plays during her life, including several adaptations of her own novels. One of her plays, The Mousetrap, has run consistently on the West End since 1952, making it the longest-running play in the world.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wrote 12 plays, including an adaptation of his Sherlock Holmes novels, and all premiered in England, while Dorothy L. Sayers wrote nine.

Set on Long Island, The Housemaid follows Millie Calloway, a young woman with a dark past who accepts a job as a live-in maid for a wealthy family, only to discover they have much darker secrets of their own.

The film adaptation stars Sydney Sweeney as Millie, with Amanda Seyfried and Brandon Sklenar as Nina and Andrew Winchester, the couple who employ her. A cast for the stage adaptation has yet to be announced, though it will follow the same general storyline.

The Housemaid will run for eight days at Richmond Theatre, starting September 11, 2027, and closing September 18—but tickets will be on sale as early as Friday, November 6. Future tour dates and locations are yet to be announced.
