Why the Vikings should pursue Brendan Sorsby in supplemental draft

· · 1 min read

The Minnesota Vikings quarterback situation has been very unsettled for the last 18 months, and we still won’t know for sure for another 4-6 at least. Kyler Murray could work out and extend in Minnesota, or he could flame out, and Minnesota turns back to J.J. McCarthy. With there being so much uncertainty around the quarterback room, should the Vikings take a shot on Texas Tech’s Brendan Sorsby?

Sorsby has been in a legal battle with the NCAA over his eligibility after being caught gambling on games he played in, which is a major violation. After earning his eligibility back, he would decide to enter the NFL’s supplemental draft anyway. Here’s what his stats look like from last season:

  • 61.6% completion percentage

  • 2,800 passing yards

  • 27/5 TD/INT ratio

  • 580 rushing yards, nine touchdowns

I can understand the appeal of Sorsby. He has a live arm that can layer the throws when he needs to with his strength. He has upside with his legs, which is becoming more standard in the NFL. The accuracy needs some work, but with a clean pocket, he can hit all the throws he needs to. Minus a tick of an accuracy difference, he reminds me of Murray in their playstyles, to an extent.

It would likely cost a day two pick, probably a third-rounder, but if this front office has any questions about the direction of this quarterback room, I could see Minnesota pulling the trigger for another injection of juice into this room.
