Why Mike Conley signed with the Boston Celtics

It is no secret why the Boston Celtics would want to sign a veteran star like Mike Conley to their roster, as they did this offseason. But what attracted the Fayetteville, Arkansas native to the Celtics? In a recent interview with CLNS Media, Minnesota Timberwolves beat writer Jon Krawczynsky shed some light on how Conley settled on Boston as the next team he wants to play for.

“I was told Mike really wanted to at least spend one year playing for a flagship franchise,” said the New York Times reporter. And when it comes to flagship franchises, the Celtics are as good as it gets.

An original member of the league since its Basketball Association of America (BAA – a precursor league of the NBA) days, the Ohio State alum landed on the team with more regular season wins and more titles than any other ball club in the history of the Association.

“This is nothing against the (Memphis) Grizzlies or the (Utah) Jazz or the Timberwolves, but none of those teams are in royalty with the NBA,” said Krawczynsky. “The Boston Celtics are historic.”

“They have a history and a gravitas about them that Conley wanted to experience what it was like playing for that kind of a franchise with that kind of a fan base with that kind of a lore about them.”
