Netflix’s upcoming action thriller Maelstrom has found a new leading man in Keanu Reeves. Directed by Carry-On filmmaker Jaume Collet-Serra, the movie previously had Reacher star Alan Ritchson in negotiations for its main star, as Variety reported in July 2026. Deadline subsequently reported in October that Reeves would take over after Ritchson left the project. The reason for Ritchson’s departure has not been disclosed, and Netflix has yet to announce a release date. Losing Ritchson could have been a setback for Maelstrom, but landing Reeves gives the movie plenty of reason for optimism.
In Maelstrom, a federal marshal is assigned to protect an arms dealer’s fiancée before she testifies against him. When the dealer’s men attack their safe house during a hurricane, the pair have to survive the night together. The storm has cut off communications, and reinforcements can’t reach them.
Ritchson’s fights in Reacher make it easy to see why he was considered for the role. But Reeves has spent decades playing men who take a beating and barely make it out alive, from Speed to The Matrix and John Wick. There’s still reason to worry about his characters, even knowing how well they can fight. That could make a long night trapped in Maelstrom’s safe house more tense.
Keanu Reeves’ Biggest Action Hits Show Why He’s Right For Maelstrom
Ritchson has become closely associated with Jack Reacher, but Reeves has several roles that could compete for his best-known character. Speed gave him one as Jack Traven, an LAPD officer trying to save passengers aboard a bus that will explode if it drops below 50 mph. Reeves spends much of the movie climbing between vehicles and figuring out how to get people to safety. It’s a pretty good match for Maelstrom, where protecting a witness means dealing with a hurricane as well as gunmen.
During The Matrix in 1999, Reeves played Neo, a hacker who discovers his world is a simulation, meaning to take on martial arts alongside weapons. The lobby shootout and subway fight helped make Reeves as recognizable in Neo’s black coat as he had been behind the wheel beside Sandra Bullock.
Twenty years after Speed, John Wick gave him yet another hit as a retired assassin seeking revenge after a mobster’s son kills his dog. Three sequels later, John is as much a part of Reeves’ career as Jack or Neo. That’s what makes his casting in Maelstrom very exciting. A standalone thriller might seem like a smaller prospect after The Matrix, but John Wick started that way, too.
Keanu Reeves And Jaume Collet-Serra Could Be A Great Action Pairing

Jaume Collet-Serra has made some of his best thrillers by giving his lead very little room to escape. In Non-Stop, Liam Neeson plays an air marshal receiving messages from someone threatening to kill passengers aboard his flight. As he searches for the killer in Non-Stop, his increasingly aggressive behavior makes the passengers see him as the threat. Neeson has to play a man trying to save people who are becoming afraid of him.
The Shallows takes away even those resources. Blake Lively plays a surfer stranded on a rock with a shark circling nearby. Collet-Serra makes the distance between her and the beach agonizing, especially as the rising tide threatens her refuge. She can see the shore, but reaching it means getting back in the water with the shark.
That experience should serve Collet-Serra well in Maelstrom, where the house offers shelter from the hurricane but makes the marshal and witness easier to corner. Reeves could give those scenes some of their best moments, especially when the marshal has to decide whether it’s still safe to stay. Collet-Serra knows how to make that hesitation tense, and Keanu Reeves can sell the effort of thinking through a problem while everything around him goes wrong.
