Warning! This article contains SPOILERS for Black Doves season 2.Though the finale of Black Doves season 2 wrapped up the mystery of Mrs. Reed’s past and Kestrel in a neat bow, the acclaimed spy thriller also left several unanswered questions behind. After a breakneck season filled with political intrigue, the emergence of a rival spy organization in Kestrel to rival the Black Doves organization, and more, the finale of Black Doves season 2 wrapped most of its plot lines up rather neatly.
For example, the mystery surrounding Mrs. Reed’s past and Vita’s identity were spelled out quite clearly, and Katia got a chance to lay out her entire revenge plan in plain English, just before being foiled. Most of the cast of Black Doves had good reasons to do the things they did, and the world of the show has mostly gone back to normal. Part of the reason reviews for Black Doves season 2 are so good is precisely because the show manages to keep control of a very complex storyline and land the finale.
As masterful as the ending of Black Doves season 2 was, there were still a few loose ends, and Netflix left the door open for a potential third season of Black Doves. Some of those unanswered questions have huge implications for Helen, Sam, and everyone else they’re involved with, along with England and the world as a whole. While these questions won’t be answered until next season, they’re still worth investigating now.

What Will Kestrel Do Next After Black Doves Season 2’s Ending?

By far the biggest unanswered question from the ending of Black Doves season 2 centers around the fate of Kestrel, the rival covert organization of the Black Doves that was formerly led by Vita, aka Katia. As the ending showed, Patrick (Sam Riley) survived the final firefight and even taunted Helen with a calling card. Reed hypothesized that Kestrel survived Vita’s death and actually wanted the Black Doves to know that they still pose a threat.
Reed also mentioned that Patrick had been spotted boarding a plane to Tokyo, which clearly proves that Kestrel has grown into a global power far beyond their East Berlin roots. The ending of Black Doves season 2 sets up Kestrel as the SPECTRE to the Black Doves’ MI6, to use a James Bond analogy. What isn’t as clear, however, is what Kestrel plans to do next or how the Black Doves plan to respond.
With Vita dead, Kestrel probably won’t take as much interest in the Black Doves as they once did. They’ll likely still want revenge for Vita’s murder, but their main priority will likely shift towards rebuilding their organization and spreading unrest and anarchy throughout the world. Unfortunately, the world is a very big place, and without Vita’s revenge quest against Reed to tie them to England, there’s no telling where or how Kestrel will strike next. Only Black Doves season 3 can answer that question.
Fortunately for the Black Doves, Kestrel made some very powerful enemies by overplaying their hand this season. Vita and Kestrel murdered Cecile, a United States delegate, in cold blood and failed to frame the Black Doves for it. Reed and Conteh will almost certainly give that information to the U.S. freely, which could mean the CIA will also be hunting Kestrel down in season 3. On top of that, Kestrel orchestrated a massive terrorist attack in the heart of London and nearly killed the Prime Minister; the full force of MI6 should also be seeking retribution.

Why Did Wallace Lie To MI5 About Helen?

One of the more surprising twists in Black Doves season 2’s finale came from Wallace Webb. Despite growing distant from Helen all season long, learning that she was actively deceiving him for their entire relationship, and being confronted with evidence from MI5 that she was living under a false identity, Wallace covered for her with Agent Perryman. He lied and said that Helen had simply hid during the attack by Kestrel, helping keep her cover intact.
It’s not entirely clear why Wallace lied for Helen, but there are a few likely explanations. The first is that Wallace simply still loves Helen. They have been married for years, after all, and they have two children together. Even with all the deceit and the growing distrust between them, he probably wants to keep her safe. Wallace may know that Helen has been lying to him for years, but she’s still his wife and the mother of his children, and he wouldn’t throw her to the proverbial wolves.
Additionally, Wallace has his political career to think of. Several times this season, Wallace said that he couldn’t divorce Helen while he was Prime Minister, as his polling numbers hinge on him being a family man. If divorce would have been detrimental to his political career, exposing the fact that he had been honey potted by a private espionage agency would have been catastrophic. Admitting that the highest level of the British government had been infiltrated by foreign interests wouldn’t just cost Wallace his position, it could very well land him in jail for treason. Part of his decision may have been made to save his own skin.

Will Wallace Be Able To Forgive Helen For Deceiving Him?

Though Wallace lied on her behalf, Helen isn’t out of the proverbial woods with her husband just yet. Wallace doesn’t know the full extent of Helen’s many lies yet, but he knows that she has been deceiving him for years about everything, even her name and history. Black Doves season 2 ended with Wallace and Helen finally sitting down to speak to each other openly, and the fate of their marriage likely hangs on Helen’s answers.
Black Doves season 3 will need to explain how that conversation played out and what Wallace decides to do with the truth about Helen once he finally has it. It also remains to be seen how truthful Helen will be; will she explain that she’s been stealing government secrets for a spy organization, or will she try to lie and say that she hid her checkered past all by herself?
Helen’s future with the Black Doves also depends on Wallace’s response to this conversation. If she manages to stay hidden and stay married, Helen will continue being an important asset to Reed and Conteh. If Wallace decides to get a divorce after all, Helen may have to become a fully fledged agent for the Black Doves, which could mean she’ll be sent on more dangerous missions outside of England. A lot is riding on this conversation, and Black Doves season 3 needs to provide answers.

Is Sam Ever Going To Return To England & Helen?
<<img src="https://static0.srcdn.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2026/11/bd_202_unit_01331.jpg?q=49&fit=crop&w=825&dpr=2" />

Sam Young’s reason for leaving England and returning to his quiet life in Italy may make sense, but there are still some loose threads surrounding him. After turning down Patrick’s offer to join Kestrel, Sam returned to the Italian village he retreated to after Helen saved him and Michael a few years earlier. While Sam told Helen that if she ever needed him, he would come back, it’s not clear if he really meant it.
After all, Sam has been going through the ringer in recent years. After losing Michael and being forced to kill Jerry, Sam’s love life is in the toilet. His work as an assassin has been taking a massive toll on his mental health and filling him with guilt and shame. Getting out of the game is the best thing he could possibly do for himself, and it may end up that Sam decides he wants to stay in Italy permanently.
There are ways Sam could come back to England to be a trigger man again, but it’s not clear which explanation Black Doves season 3 will use. Helen could lure him back if she’s in sufficient danger, but she may be hesitant to do that, considering everything Sam has already done for her and how much he needs a break. Kestrel does know how to blackmail Sam into doing what they want, so they could also lure him back into the game. For now, Sam is far from a guaranteed presence in Black Doves season 3.

How Will America Respond To Cecile’s Murder?
<<img src="https://static0.srcdn.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2026/11/bd_201_unit_01373_rt2.jpg?q=49&fit=crop&w=825&dpr=2" />

The last loose thread Black Doves season 2 forgot to tie up concerns the United States of America. Cecile, the U.S. delegate to Wallace’s peace summit, was murdered by an independent terror organization on British soil. That’s a massive political scandal that should have far-reaching repercussions for Black Doves season 3. Unfortunately, given how little the show has revealed about its version of the U.S., it’s hard to predict what those repercussions could be.
As previously mentioned, Conteh and Reed will likely provide an anonymous tip to the U.S. that exposes Kestrel as the true culprits behind Cecile’s murder. The CIA would then likely get involved with MI6 directly, and their agents may even get in contact with the Black Doves as well. American intelligence agencies, historically, don’t play nice with others, though, so the CIA may be more hindrance than help in tracking down Kestrel.
Cecile’s death also has massive implications for Wallace and the public-facing British government. It was his peace summit, after all, and the U.K. was responsible for the security of the delegates there. Wallace also personally invited Cecile’s killer, Katia, to the summit against Cecile’s advice. This could easily turn into a major political disaster for Wallace, one that could command most of his attention for Black Doves season 3.
