Why F1 is Eyeing the Return of Mid-Race Refueling

Formula 1 cars have spent the last decade gradually turning into high-speed limousines. Despite the FIA’s recent attempts to mandate a “nimble car” concept for the 2026 regulations, the current hybrid challengers remain undeniably large, heavily reliant on massive fuel cells and bulky battery packs.

But it seems the governing body is finally ready to take drastic measures for the next era of the sport.

According to a breaking update from @wearetherace, the FIA is reportedly targeting a monumental 100kg weight reduction for the next set of regulations. To actually achieve a diet that extreme, they are seriously evaluating one of the most controversial mechanisms in F1 history: the return of mid-race refuelling.

Here is why F1 might bring the fire hoses back to the pit lane.

You cannot magically shave 100 kilograms off a modern Formula 1 car just by stripping away carbon fiber. The hybrid power units are heavy, and the strict structural crash-safety mandates are completely non-negotiable.

The most realistic way to drastically shrink the cars is to target the fuel tank. Under recent regulations, cars have been required to carry up to 110kg of fuel just to make it from lights to flag without stopping.

That requires a massive, elongated fuel cell located directly behind the driver, which naturally forces the aerodynamicists to extend the wheelbase and widen the chassis just to accommodate the sheer volume of liquid.

If mid-race refuelling returns, teams would only need to start the race with a fraction of that initial fuel load. A significantly smaller fuel cell means a shorter chassis, a tighter wheelbase, and a lighter overall car right off the starting grid.

For F1 purists, the prospect of refuelling is a dream come true. It would instantly revive the hyper-aggressive sprint-stint strategies of the 1990s and 2000s, where drivers pushed flat-out on light fuel loads rather than constantly nursing their tires and coasting into braking zones to save gas.

However, there is a reason refuelling was famously banned over a decade ago:

  • Safety: Pumping highly combustible fuel at massive rates—historically up to 12 liters per second—into a boiling hot race car is inherently dangerous. The paddock has seen its fair share of terrifying pit-lane infernos, and bringing that risk back into a cost-cap era is a massive safety gamble.

  • Track Position: Refuelling often killed on-track overtaking. Teams historically realized it was much easier to pass a rival in the pit lane through calculated fuel strategies (overcuts and undercuts) than by battling wheel-to-wheel on the asphalt.

Safety: Pumping highly combustible fuel at massive rates—historically up to 12 liters per second—into a boiling hot race car is inherently dangerous. The paddock has seen its fair share of terrifying pit-lane infernos, and bringing that risk back into a cost-cap era is a massive safety gamble.

Track Position: Refuelling often killed on-track overtaking. Teams historically realized it was much easier to pass a rival in the pit lane through calculated fuel strategies (overcuts and undercuts) than by battling wheel-to-wheel on the asphalt.

The fact that the FIA is even entertaining the idea of refuelling proves just how desperate they are to solve the sport’s weight crisis. The current generation of cars has simply grown too large and cumbersome for classic, narrow circuits like Monaco and Imola to produce good racing.

If shedding 100kg means accepting the logistical headaches and fire hazards of refuelling rigs, the governing body just might decide the risk is worth the ultimate reward: a genuinely nimble race car.
