Making room for wonder again

Restoring curiosity does not require schools to abandon their curricula or turn every lesson into an elaborate experiment. It begins with making questions a normal and valued part of learning. Teachers can invite students to explain their reasoning, predict what might happen, compare different interpretations and connect classroom concepts to situations they recognise. Even a short discussion about why a particular answer makes sense can move a lesson beyond simple recall.

For example, a science teacher discussing water pollution could ask students to consider how waste from their community might affect nearby rivers and the people who depend on them. In mathematics, learners could investigate how percentages are used when comparing market prices or calculating discounts. In literature, students could discuss why characters make particular choices and whether different decisions might have changed the outcome. These approaches connect academic content to familiar experiences and give students reasons to think beyond the textbook.

Teachers can also protect curiosity by responding constructively to questions they cannot immediately answer. Acknowledging uncertainty and investigating the answer together shows students that learning is not limited to possessing ready-made knowledge. It demonstrates that asking questions is a sign of engagement, not weakness. Similarly, allowing students to make mistakes, explain their thinking and revise their conclusions can help create an atmosphere in which intellectual risk-taking feels safe.

The OECD’s research on cognitive engagement recommends giving students opportunities to shape questions around issues they care about, investigate meaningful problems and share their findings with real audiences. It also stresses the importance of appropriate teacher guidance. Curiosity does not mean leaving learners entirely on their own; students need enough structure and support to explore ideas productively and connect their discoveries to learning goals.

Parents and school leaders also have a role to play. Parents can encourage children to explain what they have learnt, explore their interests and ask questions without immediately supplying every answer. Schools can support teachers through professional development, accessible learning materials and assessment approaches that reward understanding alongside factual knowledge. Where resources are limited, simple investigations, thoughtful discussions and locally available materials can still provide opportunities for discovery.

Most importantly, students should be encouraged to see learning as more than a route to examination success. Grades and qualifications matter, but education should also help them become people who can investigate problems, evaluate claims, adapt to new information and continue learning independently. These abilities become especially important in a world where information is readily available but not always accurate, and where the ability to ask meaningful questions can be as valuable as knowing where to find answers.

Curiosity is not disappearing simply because students have lost their interest in learning. In many cases, the way learning is organised leaves too little room for questions, exploration and independent thinking. Examination pressure, rigid teaching practices, limited resources and the fear of making mistakes can all contribute to classrooms where providing the correct answer matters more than understanding how to arrive at it.

However, this does not have to remain the norm. When teachers welcome questions, connect lessons to real experiences and give students room to investigate ideas, they can make learning more meaningful without abandoning academic standards. Schools, parents and education policymakers must also recognise that curiosity is not a distraction from serious learning; it is part of what makes learning possible.

Ultimately, a classroom should prepare students not only to answer the questions they are given but also to recognise the questions worth asking. When education preserves that sense of wonder, students are better positioned to become thoughtful, independent learners who continue seeking knowledge long after they leave school.
