Why aren’t ABS challenges allowed in Field of Dreams Game?

MLB returns to the cornfields of Dyersville, Iowa tonight for the Field of Dreams Game, a celebration of the iconic 1989 baseball film starring Kevin Costner.

Aaron Nola and the Philadelphia Phillies take on Taj Bradley and the Minnesota Twins with first pitch set for 7:30 p.m. ET. Be prepared, however, for an elaborate ceremony ahead of the first Field of Dreams Game since 2022, which may include Costner himself.

The Phillies and Twins are wearing vintage uniforms for the game, and MLB is also turning back the clock from a rules perspective. ABS challenges will not be allowed after being introduced for the first time this season. Let’s get into why.

Dyersville’s 8,000-seat ballpark doesn’t have MLB’s ABS technology installed, according to The Athletic’s Matt Gelb. It’s the same reason why April’s Mexico City Series between the Arizona Diamondbacks and San Diego Padres didn’t feature ABS challenges.

There you have it. This Field of Dreams Game will be old school in more ways than one.
