Abdul El-Sayed is one of the leading candidates in the 2026 Michigan Senate Democratic primary. The physician and former public health official is running to replace retiring U.S. Senator Gary Peters in one of the most competitive races of the cycle. The Michigan Democratic primary is on August 4, 2026, with El-Sayed going up against U.S. Representative Haley Stevens, state senator Mallory McMorrow, and other candidates for the nomination.

El-Sayed is not a career politician. He trained as a physician and epidemiologist, earning his medical degree from Columbia University after completing a bachelor’s degree at the University of Michigan on a full-tuition scholarship and a doctorate from Oxford University on a Rhodes Scholarship. He served as Detroit’s health department director after the city’s bankruptcy in 2015, where he worked to remove lead from public school buildings and expand access to the overdose-reversal drug Narcan. During that time, he spearheaded a program that canceled up to $700 million in medical debt for 300,000 Wayne County residents. He also hosts the podcast “America Dissected” and has authored three books.

Before his Senate bid, El-Sayed ran for governor of Michigan in the 2018 Democratic primary. He lost to Gretchen Whitmer. That campaign raised his profile as a progressive voice in Michigan politics and earned him a national following on the left.

How Old Is Abdul El-Sayed?

El-Sayed is 41 years old. He was born on October 31, 1984, in Detroit, Michigan. He grew up in the Detroit metropolitan area with his father, Mohamed, an Egyptian immigrant and engineer, and his stepmother, Jacqueline, who is from Gratiot County, Michigan, and is also an engineer. He played lacrosse at the University of Michigan before pursuing his graduate studies abroad.

Is Abdul El-Sayed Married?

El-Sayed married Sarah Jukaku, a psychiatrist, in 2006. The couple lives in Ann Arbor, Michigan, with their two daughters, Emmalee and Serene.

Abdul El-Sayed Is Running for U.S. Senate

El-Sayed is running as a progressive, campaigning on Medicare for All, getting money out of politics, and opposing what he has called the “Trump-Musk” agenda. He has been endorsed by U.S. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders, according to The Washington Times. The primary on August 4, 2026, will determine the Democratic nominee heading into the November general election.
