KEY TAKEAWAYS:

  • Mohsin Naqvi’s current term as Asian Cricket Council (ACC) president is expected to end in April 2027.
  • The ACC president’s role became a major talking point after Indian women’s team (in 2026) and Indian men’s team (in 2025) refused to receive the Asia Cup trophy from Naqvi.
  • The next Asia Cup is expected to take place after his current term ends, meaning he is unlikely to be ACC president during the tournament.

When does Mohsin Naqvi’s term as ACC president end?

Mohsin Naqvi’s position as Asian Cricket Council (ACC) president has once again come under the spotlight after the India women’s cricket team refused to receive the Asia Cup trophy from him following their victory over Sri Lanka in the 2026 final.

The episode was almost a repeat of the controversy from the 2025 Men’s Asia Cup final, when the Indian men’s cricket team also refused to accept the trophy from Naqvi.

With Naqvi holding the roles of ACC president, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman and Pakistan’s interior minister, his presence at the trophy presentation has become a particularly sensitive issue for Indian cricket and its government.

The question now is how long Naqvi will remain in charge of the ACC. According to PTI journalist Kushan Sarkar, Naqvi’s current tenure as ACC president is due to end in April 2027.

That would mean his current term is expected to expire before the next Asia Cup, which is scheduled for June 2027 in Bangladesh.

Will Mohsin Naqvi be ACC President during the next Asia Cup?

Naqvi is unlikely to serve as ACC president at the next Asia Cup, as his current tenure is expected to conclude in April 2027. That would mean the ACC would have a different president by the time the next Asia Cup begins.

That could mean that if India wins the next Asia Cup, they may have a very different experience at the trophy presentation and possibly even get their hands on the trophy at the ground.

Mohsin Naqvi’s tenure as chairman of @ACCMedia1 ends in April, 2027 which is roughly another 7 months.
Is there a provision for extension? Yes.
Will he get vote of support from Board? Certainly Not.
As of now @BCCI unlikely to do anything but Naqvi certainly won’t get 1 more…

— Kushan Sarkar (@kushansarkar) September 14, 2026

However, there is an important caveat. Naqvi’s April 2027 end date refers to his current term, and it does not necessarily mean he cannot remain in the position beyond that point.

According to Sarkar, there is a provision that could extend Naqvi’s tenure as ACC president. That means his reported April 2027 end date may not be the absolute end of Naqvi in the role.

An extension would require the relevant support within the ACC, though, and Sarkar believes Naqvi is unlikely to secure another term, claiming that the BCCI is unlikely to support him and that he would not receive backing from other ACC members.

Why is Mohsin Naqvi’s position as ACC president controversial?

Naqvi’s position is unusual because he simultaneously serves as the head of Pakistan cricket, Pakistan’s interior minister, and the president of the ACC.

His role with the ACC puts him at the centre of the Asian cricket governing body, while his position as PCB chairman places him directly within Pakistan’s cricket administration.

India’s government has boycotted bilateral talks with Pakistan. The BCCI has also adopted the same stance with the two countries facing each other in cricket only in multi-team tournaments.

As ACC president, Naqvi has the privilege of awarding the trophy at the post-match presentation of Asian cricket tournaments, including the Asia Cup final.

However, with the Indians viewing Naqvi as a Pakistan government official, they have adopted a stance to boycott him, or in this case, refuse to receive trophies from him.
