The Tar Heels are now one victory from returning to the College World Series for the second time under head coach Scott Forbes. USC, seeking its first trip to Omaha in more than a quarter-century, will get the same chance in Sunday’s deciding game.

Here’s what Hynek said after his clutch performance.

“We’ve left quite a few guys on base, but we’re not going to put too much stock into that. We’re not going to let that get in our heads. We know that we’re talented, we know that we’re more than capable of doing that, and we’re a couple swings away from breaking this game open. Might as well save them for tomorrow…

“We knew (USC pitcher Grant Govel) threw a lot of strikes, knew that he was going to come right after us, so I was really just trying to be selective in my zone with a heater and get a good swing off on it. Being able to (hit the second inning HR) and being able to break through first after the game yesterday felt good. And anytime you have a lead with Jason on the mound, you feel pretty confident that you’re going to win that game…

What Colin Hynek said after UNC

“I think the main thing was it felt like almost every count was 0-1. The amount of first pitch strikes he threw today, and as the game went on, he really was executing to the spot that was called. He really, really locked in as the game went on, and at that point you know when J’s on, it’s hard to do anything against him.”
