Just hours before free agency begins, ESPN reported that LeBron James will not be returning to the Los Angeles Lakers , where he has spent the last eight seasons of his career. He intends to play for a record-setting 24th year during the 2026-27 season, but the future Hall of Famer will be doing so with a different team.
For the fourth time in his career, James will enter the open market as a free agent, allowing him to sign with any team he chooses. The Cleveland Cavaliers , Miami Heat , and Golden State Warriors are the top three teams rumored to land James once free agency begins on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
According to DraftKings, however, the Detroit Pistons , the New York Knicks and the Dallas Mavericks have the fifth-best odds to sign James, all at +3000.
A lot must happen for James and the Pistons to agree, and the chances of the NBA’s All-Time scoring leader coming to the Motor City are slim to none. However, James has been fond of watching the Pistons’ rise over the last two years, especially during their 113-110 victory over the Lakers at Little Caesars Arena on March 23 .
Led by Daniss Jenkins ‘ impressive 30-point performance, James admired the Pistons’ play despite the absence of Cade Cunningham , who missed the game with a collapsed lung.
“They’re the same team — super physical, super fast. They play well. They execute. They’re well coached. No difference (from December),” LeBron James said after the loss in March. “Obviously, the only difference is you have an MVP-type caliber player being out. But when you have a really good team, guys step up. They can’t make up for what Cade brings to the table because Cade is that guy, but other guys are just stepping up.”
In his eight seasons with the Lakers, James, 41, averaged 25.9 points per game while shooting 51.3% from the field. He also recorded 7.9 assists and 7.7 rebounds over the course of 479 games. According to reports, happiness will determine James’ next and possibly final team in his career.
