While Michael Crichton was best known for creating the Jurassic Park franchise, the acclaimed author and filmmaker also had a massive influence on television. After writing the Jurassic Park novel and the screenplay for its 1993 film adaptation, Crichton found success with NBC’s spectacular medical drama ER, which he created and executive produced for 15 seasons. Tragically, Crichton couldn’t produce more shows after ER, as he passed away at age66 in 2008. Still, Crichton’s legacy lives on through popular shows inspired by his iconic works.
Nearly a decade after his death, HBO adapted Crichton’s 1973 cult classic film Westworld into a TV show, which lasted four seasons. The dystopian Western series revolves around a technologically advanced amusement park, where wealthy guests fulfill their Wild West fantasies with the help of human-like android robots called “hosts.” However, things go terribly wrong when the hosts start acting outside their programming and gaining autonomy. When the show debuted in 2016, Westworld became an instant global phenomenon, with critics and audiences praising its stellar ensemble cast, masterclass storytelling, high production quality, and timely, thought-provoking themes.
While Westworld remains one of HBO’s most intriguing and ambitious shows ever, it isn’t the best Crichton TV series. That title belongs to Netflix’s animated series Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous, which is set at the same time as Chris Pratt’s 2015 blockbuster film Jurassic World. Premiering in 2020, Camp Cretaceous follows six teen campers working together to survive after being left behind on Isla Nublar during the dinosaur outbreak. The sci-fi adventure show ended its five-season run with an average rating of 92% on Rotten Tomatoes, surpassing the entire Jurassic Park and Jurassic World franchises.
Netflix’s Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous Is Better Than Westworld

There are many reasons why Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous is absolutely the better Crichton series than Westworld. In terms of narrative structure and consistency, the Netflix show stayed true to the franchise’s central themes and plot while keeping the kid-centric storyline fresh and exciting. Even though Westworld earned acclaim for its masterful season 1, it failed to live up to expectations as the seasons progressed because its storytelling became incoherent.
The creative team, led by creators Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, went overboard trying to make Westworld more mysterious and twisty, which ultimately shifted the show away from its core themes. This alienated the audience with overcomplicated storylines and contributed to the HBO series’ declining viewership and ratings.
Another reason why Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous has surpassed Westworld is its well-planned character development, which made the show’s ending more worthwhile. Throughout Camp Cretaceous‘ run, Darius (Paul-Mikél Williams), Brooklynn (Jenna Ortega), Ben (Sean Giambrone), Kenji (Ryan Potter), Sammy (Raini Rodriguez), and Yaz (Kausar Mohammed), who are collectively called the “Nublar Six,” remained as the show’s emotional anchor. Their unwavering loyalty and unlikely friendship were what drew fans to become invested in their journey.
As for Westworld, although it introduced strong, compelling characters like Dolores (Evan Rachel Wood), Bernard (Jeffrey Wright), and Maeve (Thandiwe Newton), their development took unexpected turns that made it harder for the audience to stay connected to their stories.
Because the show changed so much during its final two seasons, Westworld didn’t get the chance to wrap up its story properly. Shortly after its season 4 finale in 2022, the series was canceled due to its plummeting viewership, permanently ending Westworld on a cliffhanger. Unlike the HBO sci-fi show, Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous delivered a satisfying conclusion by staying true to the core theme of Crichton’s original Jurassic Park story. No major narrative mysteries went unanswered, and all the main characters got complete story arcs.
Camp Cretaceous Is Also The Best Sequel To Jurassic Park

Although Universal Pictures’ Jurassic World movies were blockbuster hits, Netflix’s Camp Cretaceous is the superior Jurassic Park sequel. Critics and fans alike praised the animated series for returning to the franchise’s roots by flawlessly capturing the survival tone and horror vibe of Michael Crichton’s Jurassic Park novel, which many of the live-action films lacked. While Colin Trevorrow’s blockbuster franchise shifted its focus to delivering elaborate action sequences, Camp Cretaceous was more grounded and focused onthe characters’ vulnerability against unpredictable, genetically engineered prehistoric animals.
Camp Cretaceous not only featured more of the iconic Isla Nublar, introducing new sides of the terrifying island, but also showcased different perspectives on Jurassic World’s dinosaur outbreak, even taking the audience to the aftermath of the 2015 movie. This aspect was overlooked in the live-action adaptation, as the Jurassic World franchise moved on to a much broader global scale.

Despite its positive reception and a successful, four-season sequel series called Jurassic World: Chaos Theory, Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment still have no confirmed plans to bring Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous‘ beloved characters into a live-action Jurassic World project. However, that may be a good thing, given the show’s already perfect ending.
