Washington’s nightmare end to first half changed the Cowboys game

Football is all about momentum. Sometimes those shifts happen quickly and unexpectedly. The Washington Commanders were a yard away from potentially drawing level with the Dallas Cowboys right before halftime.

Jayden Daniels was giving the Cowboys defense problems while the Commanders were threatening another touchdown, and Dallas’ early control of the game was slipping. Then everything changed.

Washington’s final possession before halftime ended without points and with Daniels suffering a gruesome left elbow injury that ended his afternoon. What followed was a different challenge for the Dallas defense, while Dak Prescott and the offense helped turn a narrow advantage into a 37-20 victory.

That final opportunity ended disastrously. Daniels lost his footing after contact with offensive lineman Chris Paul and planted his left arm as he fell. His elbow buckled awkwardly beneath him. Washington came away empty-handed, and Marcus Mariota had to take over after the break. Daniels had already produced 69 rushing yards alongside 96 passing yards and a touchdown.

Those rushing yards explain why his departure mattered so much. Dallas was struggling to finish plays against him. Even when the initial coverage held up, Daniels could escape, find space and turn a broken play into another gain. Defenders had to account for both the receivers downfield and the quarterback threatening to run.

That creates difficult decisions. Step forward too early and a receiver can become available behind you. Stay back too long and Daniels can take the open grass. His ability to improvise was keeping Washington dangerous even when Dallas disrupted the original play.

Losing him changed that equation. Mariota can move, too, but Washington had lost the player whose scrambling had been causing Dallas its biggest headaches. The Cowboys still needed to execute, but the threat they had spent the first half struggling to contain was gone.

Washington initially steadied itself with a field goal after halftime. Dallas answered with a drive that put Brandon Aubrey in position to connect from 44 yards, restoring a seven-point cushion. Then the defense delivered the play that helped turn the momentum shift into clear separation.

Jaishawn Barham forced the ball loose, and Dee Winters recovered. Given that extra possession, Prescott found Jake Ferguson for a 12-yard touchdown, his second score of the afternoon. Washington later missed a field goal, and Aubrey punished that missed opportunity by drilling a 60-yarder. Dallas had scored 13 unanswered points to move ahead 30-13.

The injury was an awful moment for Daniels, and its impact on the contest was significant. It also should not erase the work Dallas did afterward. The Cowboys still had to recover the fumble, finish the touchdown opportunity and make the kicks.

Washington entered the closing seconds of the first half with a chance to tie the game and a quarterback Dallas was struggling to contain. It left without points and without Daniels. The Cowboys’ response made sure Washington never recovered control.
