Ultron Confirmed Who Marvel's Strongest Avenger Is, But Fans Won't Like The Answer

Ultron settles the debate and reveals which of the Avengers is truly the most powerful. The debate over who deserves the title of the strongest Avenger has fueled decades of intense arguments in and out of universe. Strength in the Marvel Universe is rarely a simple measurement of how much weight a hero can lift, after all. The answers vary drastically depending on the battlefield, the status of each hero’s power, and whether weapons and energy-based power can be weighed equally against sheer physical strength. Scarlet Witch can neutralize Thor using her magic, but Swordsman can technically take down Scarlet Witch if he catches her with her guard down.

Marvel Comics and the Marvel Cinematic Universe have presented several conflicting answers to this question. Wanda Maximoff has reshaped reality and rewritten the lives of everyone in the universe, while Hyperion is strong enough to stop clashing universes using his bare hands, and Sentry effortlessly rips Ares’ body in half. The MCU playfully turned this debate into a running joke in Thor: Ragnarok, where Tony Stark’s computer security recognizes Hulk as the “strongest Avenger” while relegating Thor to “Point Break.” And yet, Thor and Captain Marvel quickly claim the title in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Secret Wars.

The “strongest Avenger” debate has many possible answers, one of which gains more authority when supported by one of the Avengers’ biggest villains.

Avengers: Twilight takes place in a possible future where superheroes have been outlawed following a catastrophic event known as H-Day, which resulted in countless deaths and the destruction of Boston. During a televised discussion, an older Steve Rogers and James Stark, Tony Stark’s son, revisit the long-running debate about which Avenger deserves to be called the strongest. The young Stark points out that the individual responsible for the highest death toll was the Hulk, who had been placed under Ultron’s control. When discussing the incident, Stark confirms Hulk is the strongest Avenger, as Ultron chose to weaponize the Green Goliath rather than Thor or Captain Marvel to destroy the city.

James Stark’s assessment measures strength through destructive potential over isolated displays of power. Thor is a literal god who has fought entities like Hela and Surtur, and Captain Marvel can singlehandedly defeat entire alien armies, but Hulk offers a terrifying level of strength that rises indefinitely alongside his rage. Once Ultron gained control of Banner’s alter ego, the robot turned one of the Avengers’ best defenders into a living weapon capable of destroying an entire city as a starter feat. While Thor, Captain Marvel, and even Iron Man could technically stop Hulk at his base level, nobody can stop the Green Goliath once he crosses a certain anger threshold.

Hulk Is The One Avenger Who Could Actually Destroy The World

James Stark’s declaration that the Hulk is the strongest Avenger in Avengers: Twilight #1 becomes increasingly difficult to dispute. The most famous example is World War Hulk, when the Green Scar returns to Earth in search of vengeance against the Illuminati and illustrates how he could singlehandedly defeat all of Earth’s superheroes in a gladiator tournament. A similar demonstration takes place during Incredible Hulks , when Hulk’s transformation into Worldbreaker threatens to unleash enough energy to destroy North America. Besides, the Illuminati choose to banish the Hulk to outer space precisely because they understand that he’s one of the biggest threats to Earth, and their preemptive decision ends up backfiring.

More recent Marvel stories have taken this terrifying concept even further. In the new Ultimate Universe, Earth-6160, a considerably weaker Hulk oversees horrific experiments on Gamma Island and leaves the resistance team seemingly dead. On Earth-616, the Infernal Hulk defeats the Avengers, the Fantastic Four, and the X-Men, and he transforms many of them into monsters for his army. Parallel to The Infernal Hulk, Avengers: Armageddon explores a similar nightmare with Thunderbolt Ross, whose Red Hulk transformation turns the longtime Hulk hunter into the harbinger of a potential World War III and destroys an entire city in Europe, just like Avengers: Twilight‘s Ultron-manipulated Hulk.
