Washington football lands pledge from four-star New Jersey EDGE

The Washington Huskies stayed hot on the recruiting trail with yet another blue-chip commitment, pulling in the services of four-star edge rusher Chaz Gray.

Gray, a 6-foot-4, 250-pound product of St. Joseph’s Regional in Montvale, New Jersey, is ranked as the nation’s No. 382 overall prospect and No. 38 edge rusher by the Rivals Industry, picked to head west and join Jedd Fisch’s program over 23 other offers, including Clemson and Tennessee, both of which he had official visits set with.

As defensive coordinator Ryan Walters, defensive line coach Jason Kaufusi, and outside linebackers coach Aaron Van Horn look to retool UW’s pass rush, which has tallied just 40 sacks over the program’s first two years in the Big Ten, adding a player of Gray’s caliber should go a long way towards adding additional depth off the edge.

Although Gray has the frame and length to carry additional weight and potentially play on the inside, his best fit in Walters’ scheme appears to be on the edge. He’s a fluid athlete in every aspect of his game with a relentless motor, whether he’s setting the edge, rushing the passer, or dropping into coverage, all of which he can do from multiple alignments along the defensive front.

The commitment also symbolizes a big victory in Washington’s continued attempt to establish a national footprint on the recruiting trail, as the Huskies earned a pledge from a blue-chip prospect in Fisch’s home state for the second straight year, after four-star quarterback Derek Zammit signed with UW in 2026.

Gray is the fourth defensive lineman to join Washington’s 2027 class, alongside four-star defensive tackles Jon Ioane and Tevita Nonu, and three-star defensive lineman Matamatagi Uiagalelei.
