When the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Athletics on June 8, 15-14, it marked one of the highest-scoring games in terms of combined runs in Brewers history, but not quite the highest-scoring.
It tied for third with two other recent and memorable tilts. These games cleared the bar:
12: July 1, 1999 (31 runs)
The Brewers scored eight runs in the fourth, building a 14-4 lead that they almost gave back when the Chicago Cubs made it 14-12 with a six-run sixth.
José Valentín came into the game with only three homers that year but belted two in this game alone, part of a three-hit day. Ronnie Belliard had four hits and five RBIs, with three doubles. Dave Nilsson had four hits.
The Brewers bullpen actually worked 3⅓ scoreless innings to close it down after Hideo Nomo and Cal Eldred got knocked around. Mickey Morandini had two homers for the Cubs, and future Brewer José Hernández had one.
17, Brewers 13: June 29, 1995 (30 runs)
The Brewers sort of made it a game with four in the eighth and three in the ninth, but then again, the Chicago White Sox weren’t truly threatened in a game at County Stadium before 12,759 fans.
No Brewers player reached three hits in the game, though Turner Ward hit a three-run homer in the eighth and Nilsson joined him with three RBIs.
20, Brewers 9: March 29, 2025 (29 runs)
Oh, you had forgotten about this game, had you?
Played on the second day of the season in 2025, the Torpedo Bat-toting New York Yankees bludgeoned starter Nestor Cortes and scored 16 of their runs in the first four innings. Cortes, facing the team he’d played for his whole career before a trade to Milwaukee that offseason, allowed an astonishing three straight homers on his first three pitches of the game, then allowed a fourth first-inning homer.
The Brewers clawed back to within 4-3 in the top of the second, but Anthony Volpe hit a three-run homer against Cortes in the second, and Aaron Judge hit a grand slam against Connor Thomas in the third, followed by yet another back-to-back homer setup with Jazz Chisholm adding to the tally.
Judge, who also homered in the first-inning barrage, finished with three homers in the game and the Yankees hit nine overall. Cortes allowed five homers and five walks in just two innings, though he’d throw six shutout innings in a 1-0 win in his next start … and never make another start for the Brewers when an injury sidelined him until he was traded to the San Diego Padres at the deadline.
The Brewers started the year 0-4, then went on to win a franchise-record 97 games. Brice Turang hit the only Brewers homer of the game, but 11 players had base hits.
Like the game with the Athletics, this game had the same score and the same wild circumstances.
The Brewers scored four runs in the ninth to take a lead, with Ryan Braun‘s home run serving as the go-ahead blast, only to have the Washington Nationals score against Josh Hader and load the bases with nobody out in the bottom of the ninth. Hader managed to escape the jam by striking out three of the Nationals’ best hitters: Trea Turner, Adam Eaton and Anthony Rendon, in a wild Houdini performance.
Christian Yelich homered in the 13th to give his team the lead back, but Victor Robles delivered a sacrifice fly to re-tie the game at 12. Back came the Brewers, who got a two-run homer from Eric Thames in the 14th. With two outs in the 14th, Juan Soto reached on an error that scored a run and made it 15-14 against Junior Guerra, but he struck out pinch-hitting pitcher Joe Ross (with the Nats out of position players) to finally end it.
Soto, unfortunately, would reach on an error that would have far greater impact against the Brewers later that year in a wild-card thriller, and Joe Ross would go on to pitch for the Brewers in 2024.
Before the Pilots became the Brewers, they played a wild game before 7,360 fans at Sicks Stadium in Seattle. The Pilots scored eight in the sixth to tie the score at 11 and four in the eighth to keep the Senators at bay, with the latter rally helping flip the score after the Senators had taken a two-out lead in their half of the eighth, 13-12.
The Pilots only had 12 hits, and three of them went to Mike Hegan, with another three to Wayne Comer. Future longtime Milwaukee resident and Brewers coach Frank Howard homered for the Senators. Rich Rollins had a grand slam for Seattle.
