Bear Bonk, so., Marquette football

The sophomore appears again this fall as an athlete of the week nominee after a stellar all-around performance in Marquette’s 44-7 blowout of Madison Memorial in the opening round of the WIAA Division 1 playoffs. Bonk ran 23 times for 167 yards and three touchdowns, while also blocking two punts for the Hilltoppers, including one that he returned for a touchdown.

Connor Haen, so., Oconomowoc boys cross-country

The sophomore won the Mukwonago boys cross-country sectional in 15 minutes, 47 seconds, leading a team sectional victory and qualifying the Raccoons for the WIAA Division 1 state meet in Wisconsin Rapids on Halloween for the 14th time in program history.

Julianne Johnson, fr., Franklin girls cross-country

The freshman won the Muskego girls cross-country sectional in 18:54, qualifying individually for the WIAA Division 1 state meet alongside teammate Presley Blythe (20:31.8, 14th).

Ritisha Mathur, sr., Brookfield Academy girls tennis

The senior helped vault top-seeded Brookfield Academy to its second WIAA Division 2 state girls tennis team championship in Madison. The victory in the four-team bracket marked the second time in the last three seasons that the Blue Knights are the D2 state champions. Mathur was excellent at No. 2 singles for BA, winning both of her matches by 6-1, 6-1 scores.

Cici Schuenke, so., Brookfield East girls tennis

For the third straight season, Brookfield East is the WIAA Division 1 state team girls tennis champion. The sophomore Schuenke was superb at No. 4 singles for the Spartans, going 3-0 in her three matches in Madison. Schuenke dropped just three total games in her three matches against Brookfield Central, Bay Port and Neenah.
