Vote for Ames Tribune female Athlete of the Week for Sept. 20-26

The week of Sept. 20-26 was a busy one for high school female sports action featuring teams from the Ames area.

The Ames girls tennis team competed in the Class 2A Region 8 singles and doubles tournament on Sept. 23 in West Des Moines. The 3A No. 10 Roland-Story volleyball team swept Grand View Christian in Heart of Iowa Conference play, Ballard, the No. 11 volleyball team in 4A, dropped a five-set RRC battle to Adel-Desoto-Minburn on Sept. 22 at Adel and went 4-1 at the Nevada Invitational on Sept. 26 in Nevada.

The Nevada volleyball team went 2-3 at the Nevada Invite. In cross country, Ballard, Colo-NESCO and Nevada ran at the ACGC Invitational and Ames took sixth at the Jim Boughton Invitational in Dubuque on Sept. 24.

There were several impressive performances by female high school athletes from the Ames area during the week.

Estrem played brilliantly in defeat for the 4A No. 11 Ballard volleyball team during its five-set loss at ADM on Sept. 22 at Adel.

Estrem dished out 48 assists (9.6 per set), and she also had 13 digs and went 33 of 34 serving with one ace against the Tigers. Estrem also produced 96 digs, 26 digs and 11 kills over matches in helping the Bombers go 4-1 at the Nevada Invitational on Sept. 26 at Nevada.

Lucas was a force at middle hitter for the 3A No. 10 Roland-Story volleyball team during its 25-5, 25-9, 25-12 sweep of Grand View Christian on Sept. 24 in Des Moines.

Lucas slammed down eight kills on 29.4% efficiency for the Norse. She was especially tough on defense, finishing with four solo blocks.

McCorkle swam the fastest 200-yard freestyle time in the state so far, according to Varsity Bound, at the Little Cyclone girls swimming and diving dual meet with Indianola on Sept. 22 at the Dan Flannery Pool in Ames.

McCorkle won the 200 freestyle in one minute, 54.09 seconds. She won the race by 14.48 seconds.

Stanley broke 19 minutes and placed fifth in the varsity girls race for the Ames girls cross country team at the Jim Boughton Invitational on Sept. 24 in Dubuque.

Stanley ran the 5-kilometer course in 18 minutes, 50.9 seconds.

Erickson continued to put up impressive times during her senior year of girls cross country after placing fourth for Colo-NESCO at the ACGC Invitational on Sept. 24 at Guthrie Center.

Erickson finished the 5k race in 19:49.
