Villarreal striker Georges Mikautadze has declared that he is ready to join a major European club, while admitting that Barcelona’s previous interest in him was particularly flattering.
The Georgia international attracted attention after an impressive first season following his move from Lyon, scoring 16 goals in 44 appearances across all competitions.
Barcelona were among the clubs monitoring his situation, with sporting director Deco reportedly keen on the forward. However, Hansi Flick was not convinced that the transfer was the right move for the Catalan side.
Mikautadze has now made clear that he believes he has the qualities to take the next step in his career, although his performances this season have not yet matched the standards he established last term.
Mikautadze believes he is ready for a bigger challenge
The 26-year-old has not hidden his ambition to move to a club competing at the highest level.
Speaking about his future, the Villarreal forward expressed confidence in his ability to make that transition.

“I’ve turned 26, but I think I’m ready to move to a big club. I have everything it takes, and I try to show that every time. Maybe I just need a little more time.”
Barcelona’s interest also carries a personal significance for Mikautadze, who revealed that he supported the Spanish club during his childhood.
“Barcelona’s interest? Yes, it’s flattering and gives me even more motivation. It also means I’m doing a good job.
“Besides, when I was young, I was a Barcelona fan, ever since the days of Xavi, Iniesta, Busquets and MSN. But I hadn’t really thought much about it,” he added.
Barcelona interest showed Deco’s transfer vision
Barcelona’s admiration for Mikautadze emerged during the summer, when Deco viewed him as a potential attacking option when the Julian Alvarez move was proving difficult to execute.

Flick, however, was less enthusiastic about pursuing the deal, meaning the club did not move forward with the transfer.
Mikautadze’s links with Barcelona were real, but there is no indication that a fresh approach is currently being planned.
Difficult start at Villarreal raises questions
The striker’s current campaign has been more complicated, as he has scored five goals in 15 appearances across all competitions, but has started only five La Liga matches.
That limited involvement has clearly frustrated him, particularly given his desire to establish himself as a regular starter.
“I want to play every match, to be a starter and show that I’m a great striker. When that isn’t the case, or you come off early, you’re disappointed,” he concluded.
