USC leaned on run game in win over Rutgers

· · 2 min read

Jayden Maiava did not light up the Rutgers Scarlet Knights‘ defense. Instead, in this game, the backbone of the Trojans‘ offense was the run game. King Miller, for a second straight week, ran for 100 yards.

King Miller was my MVP for Saturday’s game. When Maiava was not connecting with his pass catchers and the offense struggled, King Miller was the solution. King Miller’s improved physicality and the strength he brings with him when he runs the ball were evident again in this game. King Miller is not only going to run away from defenders, but he is delivering aggression to guys who try to tackle him.

King Miller, as of late, has been the player we saw run wild against Big Ten teams last year. If you take away what King Miller was able to do in this game, the Trojans lose this one. King Miller finished the game with 16 carries, 102 yards, and a touchdown. An average of 6.4 yards per carry made a huge difference. On one play, it was 3rd and 8, and King Miller picked up the first down himself on the ground.

The Trojans having King Miller will make things a lot easier. This game proves that notion to be true. Miller is on pace for a big sophomore season, and he can etch his name as one of the best backs in the country, not just the Big Ten. Miller will be exactly what the Trojans need to help keep the offense churning next week and the rest of the way. In this week’s game, it is a guarantee that he has no intention of slowing down.
