Sikandar Raza produced a masterclass captain’s knock to propel Zimbabwe to a competitive 271/8 after opting to bat first in the 3rd ODI at Harare. Heading into the death overs with the innings finely poised, Raza took total charge, remaining unbeaten on a brilliant 81 off 72 balls to anchor the lower-order effort.
The hosts capitalized on the late overs, looting 40 runs from the final five. Nathan Ellis was the standout bowler for Australia, finishing as the chief destructor with figures of 3/50 from his 10 overs. Xavier Bartlett bowled the 50th over, conceding seven runs and taking a late wicket as Ernest Masuku departed for 3, while Blessing Muzarabani joined Raza at the end.
Set a target of 272 on a pitch where veteran leg-spinner Graeme Cremer made his return after an eight-year absence, Australia will require a steady chase at a required run rate of 5.44 runs per over to complete a 3-0 series sweep.

Craig Ervine continued to lead the middle-overs fightback, converting his steady start into a classy half-century off 67 balls and keeping the scoreboard ticking. Australia’s frustration mounted as they burned two DRS reviews against Raza in the 32nd and 38th overs, both struck down by umpire Forster Mutizwa.
The Zimbabwean captain capitalized on the reprieves, hitting three boundaries and a six to race to 38* off 39 balls. With the pair raising an unbroken 50-run stand and plundering 11 runs off Nathan Ellis in the 40th over, Zimbabwe enter the mandatory third powerplay well-placed to launch a big score.

Zimbabwe produced their most disciplined passage of play between overs 21 and 30, adding 52 runs without losing a wicket to push their total to 151/3. Kaia and Craig Ervine negated Australia’s multi-pronged bowling attack, which saw Mitchell Marsh utilise seven different options, to stitch together an important 80-run stand. However, Kaia’s innings was cut short at 55 when he was forced off retired hurt in the 29th over at 148/3.

Australia captain Mitchell Marsh turned to a multi-pronged spin attack, as he deployed Zampa alongside part-time options Matt Renshaw and Cooper Connolly to choke the boundary count. Zampa provided the breakthrough in the 15th over by deceiving Brendan Taylor (9) through the air and crashing into his stumps at 68/3. Rather than panic, Innocent Kaia (35* off 46) and Craig Ervine (14* off 16) dug in to steady the ship, grafting 31 runs together to take Zimbabwe into drinks at 73/3 and the total to within one run of the hundred mark by over 20.

Brian Bennett came out firing against Australia’s pace attack, as he dominated an opening stand of 34 by striking five fours and a six in a quickfire 30 off 29 deliveries. However, Australia struck on the first ball of the 7th over when Spencer Johnson induced an edge off Ben Curran (7) to Josh Inglis. The on-field call was overturned on DRS with Alex Wharf upholding the appeal. Nathan Ellis, who was introduced into the attack, made an immediate impact in the 9th over, as he dismissed the dangerous Bennett for 30 at 48/2.

The hosts had reasons to smile in the first match as Newman Nyamhuri picked up a five-wicket haul, while Craig Ervine and Sikandar Raza both struck useful half-centuries. However, Travis Head’s blistering century in the 2nd ODI doused all hopes of a comeback as Australia put up a 350+ total batting first.
Zimbabwe’s top order got starts but could not convert them into big innings, and their batsmen will be eager to make amends for that in the final ODI of the series.
