US Army Secretary Driscoll resigns amid reported tensions with Hegseth

US Army Secretary Dan Driscoll has submitted his resignation to President Donald Trump following months of reported tensions with US War Secretary Pete Hegseth over the direction of the Army and the removal of several senior officers.

The Wall Street Journal reported that Driscoll’s departure followed disagreements with Hegseth over the administration of the service and a series of senior military leadership changes.

His resignation leaves the US Army without a Senate-confirmed civilian or military leader, with General Christopher LaNeve currently serving as acting chief of staff.

LaNeve assumed the role after Hegseth removed his predecessor, General Randy George, in April.

Driscoll’s exit comes amid what the report described as a broader pattern of senior-level purges under Hegseth, which has reduced the Army’s four-star general ranks from 10 to just five, the lowest number in decades.

The latest shake-up followed the forced retirement last week of General Chris Donahue, a former commander of Delta Force.

The leadership vacuum comes as the Army faces one of its busiest operational periods in years, amid the US war with Iran and the ongoing war in Ukraine.
