LeBron James left the Los Angeles Lakers with an official farewell from the team. Lakers Governor Jeanie Buss thanked him for “eight years with the Lakers, including the title he led us to in 2020 under the toughest imaginable circumstances,” closing the book on a run that ends without another ring. 

According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, James and the front office never lined up on what it actually takes to contend, and that gap is why he’s walking away now instead of returning for a ninth season.

And the goodbye was barely finished before the phone started ringing. Charania reported that roughly a dozen teams reached out to agent Rich Paul with pitches and proposals the moment free agency officially opened.

“Rich Paul his agent got pitches from about a dozen teams when free agency opened up with offers and proposals on what it would look like for LeBron to come to their team,” Charania said. “He wants to go somewhere where it’s a chance at a championship. Something he felt was not going to be keeping him happy if he stayed in LA. Whether you have a minimum, exception, or salary cap space, you’re going to be involved.”

Shams Charania narrowed the realistic options to three teams: Golden State Warriors, Miami Heat, Cleveland Cavaliers.

Golden State can offer a $15.1 million mid-level exception, but they need to trade Moses Moody and convince Draymond Green to take less money. That is the same financial balancing act required for their rumored plan to pair James with Stephen Curry, Green, and Anthony Davis.

Cleveland has to find a sign-and-trade deal because signing James outright would limit them to a veteran minimum contract. In Miami, the front office is trying to clear cap space by trading Nikola Jovic after already landing Giannis Antetokounmpo.

The 41-year-old still has plenty in the tank to sell. This past season, he missed the first 14 games with a sciatica injury but still averaged 20.9 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 7.2 assists across 60 games. 

Entering his 24th season, he isn’t looking for the biggest paycheck. He just wants to play for a team that can compete for a championship.
