UDUSOK SUG update on electricity situation on campus

The Students’ Union Caretaker Committee (SU CTC) of Usmanu Danfodiyo University Sokoto (UDUS), under the leadership of Comrade Tasiu Aminu, has addressed the concerns over the unstable electricity supply on campus.

In a statement issued on the 2nd of May, 2026, the union said it understands the frustrations students have faced due to the poor electricity situation during the just-concluded semester.

The union noted that it has remained in consistent engagement with the university management and other relevant authorities, pushing for a quick and lasting solution to the problem. It added that students’ welfare and comfort remain a top priority.

According to the statement, the university management is already taking active steps to address the issue, with necessary measures being implemented to restore stable electricity supply across the campus. The union also expressed optimism that normal power would be reinstated soon.

In an interview with the SU CTC chairman on the current condition of the solar plant serving the university community, he noted that the solar plant has developed some unprecedented failure.

“The campus usually relies on a hybrid system where solar power is utilized during the day and the national grid (NEPA) is used at night. However, the solar plant has experienced an unprecedented failure that has surpassed previous expectations.

“The solar plant has a very big problem,” Aminu stated, noting that the university is currently consulting with professional solar experts, including international consultants , to inspect and repair the facility.

In addition to the solar failure, the Union chairman noted that the university is currently on an unfavorable electricity band. He confirmed that the Management is working to shift the campus to a different Band to ensure more consistent hours of electricity from the national grid.

While a specific date for full restoration was not given, the Union expressed optimism that the situation would improve “anytime soon” as repairs intensify.

“The most important thing is to get the solar fixed,” Aminu emphasized. “Once the solar is restored, we are going to be enjoying light.”
