Tyler Smith, All-Pro left guard for the Dallas Cowboys, will miss Sunday’s season-opening game against the New York Giants. Per Dallas coach Brian Schottenheimer, Smith will have surgery on his left thumb and be placed on injured reserve.
TJ Bass will reportedly start at left guard for Dallas.
Smith could miss as many as six weeks for Dallas.
Here is part of the reaction from SB Nation’s Blogging the Boys:
Interior offensive line depth was one of the biggest concerns for the Cowboys all training camp and preseason, and now right off the bat they’ve been dealt the biggest possible blow, losing the experienced Smith at left guard. Luckily Bass is the backup with the most experience capable of stepping into this spot, and Dallas also has Ajani Cornelius as they prepare for week one on Sunday night at the Giants.

A 2022 first-round pick by the Cowboys, Smith has been a Pro Bowl selection in each of the past three seasons. He was a second-team All-Pro in 2023.
Bass is a fourth-year player who was an undrafted free agent. He has started 10 games over the past three seasons for Dallas.
