Lions sign Joe Bachie from practice squad; one 53-man spot remains open

The Detroit Lions entered Monday, Sept. 7, with two open spots on their 53-man roster. Now, they’re down to one.

Linebacker Joe Bachie, a former standout at Michigan State (2016-19), was signed from the practice squad. Running back Jabari Small and center Seth McLaughlin, both of whom were waived Sept. 2, were brought back on the practice squad, with one player taking Bachie’s place and the other replacing offensive lineman Mason Miller, who was placed on an injured list.

The Lions now have seven linebackers on their 53-man roster, in Bachie, Derrick Barnes, Jack Campbell, Trevor Nowaske, Malcolm Rodriguez, Jimmy Rolder and Devin White. Rolder, drafted in the fourth round out of Michigan, missed most of training camp after suffering a hamstring injury in early August. He avoided injured reserve, but the rookie likely still needs time to develop and reacclimate, opening the door for Bachie.

Earlier on Monday, Lions coach Dan Campbell said the team had a “pretty good idea” about how it’d address its opening at the bottom of the roster. Another move could still be made to fill out the 53-man unit before the Lions begin their season at home against the New Orleans Saints on Sept. 13.
