Tunde Ogunleye: Abdul’Aziz Yari – Leadership beyond the headlines

Maybe he is a man of few words, a leader who believes that actions speak louder than press statements. But over the last few years, Senator Abdul’Aziz Yari has emerged as one of the few Nigerian politicians whose impact can be measured not merely by political rhetoric, but by the number of lives touched through deliberate interventions.

A first-term Senator, two-term Governor of Zamfara State, former Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, and a trusted ally of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Senator Yari has over the years cultivated the image of a grassroots politician, a champion of ordinary people, and a bridge-builder across political divides, a rare quality in an era where political relevance is often measured by the volume of public relations campaigns rather than the depth of public service.

For Yari, influence has never been about occupying the headlines every day. Instead, his political philosophy appears to rest on a simpler proposition: when people’s lives improve, they become the most credible witnesses to leadership.

Since leaving office as Governor in 2019 and subsequently returning to public office as Senator representing Zamfara West in 2023, Yari has maintained an uncommon consistency in humanitarian support, educational development, political consensus-building and legislative advocacy. While critics and supporters may disagree on aspects of his politics, as they inevitably do with any major political figure, few dispute the scale of his interventions across North-West Nigeria.

In recent years, Senator Yari has repeatedly invested in large-scale humanitarian and welfare programmes targeted at vulnerable communities. One of the clearest examples came in August 2024, when devastating floods swept through Gummi Local Government Area, claiming lives, displacing thousands of residents and destroying homes and livelihoods. In response, Yari donated 15 trucks of relief materials, including rice, millet and maize, alongside 5,000 mattresses and 10,000 blankets to support affected families. He also established an assessment committee to evaluate the damage and pledged support for rebuilding efforts using more durable construction standards.

His humanitarian outreach has not been limited to emergency disasters. Across successive Ramadan and Eid periods, he has overseen the distribution of hundreds of truckloads of rice, maize, millet, guinea corn and sugar across Zamfara State, reaching traditional institutions, religious leaders, women and youth groups, people living with disabilities, community associations and thousands of ordinary families.

For many beneficiaries, these interventions have represented more than seasonal generosity. They have provided immediate relief at moments when families faced extraordinary hardship, whether from natural disasters or economic pressures.

Perhaps the most enduring of Senator Yari’s interventions is his commitment to education. Recognising that poverty can deny young people access to higher education, he launched one of the largest privately supported scholarship programmes in the North-West.

The initiative provides comprehensive support for thousands of students, covering tuition fees, accommodation, study materials and monthly upkeep throughout the duration of their academic programmes. Most recently, the programme expanded to support more than 2,000 students, with about ₦216 million disbursed for tuition payments to beneficiaries, including orphans and other indigent students.

Subsequent disbursements running into hundreds of millions of naira have enabled over two thousand students, including orphans and indigent beneficiaries, to continue their education in universities and tertiary institutions across the region.

Unlike one-off bursaries that provide temporary relief, this initiative is designed to accompany beneficiaries throughout their academic journey, reflecting an understanding that education is one of the most sustainable investments any society can make.

Years from now, the doctors, engineers, teachers, lawyers, pharmacists and entrepreneurs emerging from this programme may well become one of the defining legacies of Yari’s public service.

Since joining the Senate in 2023, Yari has also used the national platform to draw attention to the security crisis confronting Zamfara and the wider North-West. He has consistently supported motions calling for stronger federal responses to banditry, rural insecurity and the protection of vulnerable communities. Alongside colleagues from the region, he has advocated coordinated security operations capable of addressing criminal networks that operate across state boundaries.

He has equally lent his voice to discussions on federal infrastructure, particularly roads whose deteriorating condition continues to affect commerce, agriculture and security across northern Nigeria.

While legislative advocacy often attracts less public attention than direct philanthropy, it remains one of the most important responsibilities of any senator: ensuring that the concerns of constituents are heard within the highest lawmaking institution in the country.

One of Senator Yari’s distinguishing characteristics has been his ability to build alliances. His political journey has placed him at the centre of several critical moments within the All Progressives Congress, both in Zamfara State and nationally. His influence extends beyond electoral contests into party organisation, reconciliation and consensus-building.

His bid for the Senate Presidency in 2023 demonstrated the breadth of relationships he has cultivated across the National Assembly. Although unsuccessful, his strong showing reflected the confidence many colleagues placed in his leadership.

For Yari, politics has often appeared less about permanent divisions than about building coalitions capable of advancing common goals.

In today’s media environment, visibility is frequently mistaken for effectiveness. Social media updates, press conferences and carefully choreographed public appearances often dominate the political conversation. Yari has largely taken a different route. His style has been defined less by constant commentary and more by periodic but substantial interventions, whether through humanitarian assistance, scholarships, community support or legislative engagement.

This quieter approach has not insulated him from criticism; no politician of consequence escapes scrutiny. Yet it has reinforced an image of a leader who prefers to let programmes and beneficiaries speak on his behalf. Perhaps that is why, despite the changing tides of Nigerian politics, Abdul’Aziz Yari continues to command considerable loyalty. Not because he speaks the loudest. But because, for many people, his actions have spoken first.
