With so much change having come to Tracker ahead of its fourth season, seeing the adjustments hasn’t been the easiest for longtime viewers, but the updates make it all the more clear that Colter Shaw’s (Justin Hartley) team is the key to the series’ longevity. Throughout the first episodes of Tracker season 4, viewers have had to get used to several new pieces to the Colter Shaw puzzle. Most overtly, the series’ move from filming in Vancouver to its new location in Los Angeles was supposed to be seamless, but the show looks markedly different, which has changed things significantly.
The other most notable change has been to the Tracker cast, and while viewers are used to there being shake ups on the CBS hit season after season, this change hasn’t been as tough to navigate as others. Tracker focuses on Hartley’s Colter, but his wider team includes Reenie Greene (Fiona Rene) as his dedicated lawyer and Chris Lee’s Randy as his tech support and handler. The support team, which has gone through growing pains throughout Tracker’s run, has extended to others in Reenie’s office this year, including her assistant Mel Day (Cassady McClincy Zhang) and private investigator Adam Shevlin (Michael Malarkey).
While Mel joined the Tracker team during its last season, her upgrade to a series regular and the addition of Adam into the mix marks a major shift for the CBS show. Rather than simply relying on Colter to push Tracker forward, his team of resources has never been more important to the series’ success.
Tracker Season 4’s New Colter Team Explained

When Tracker first premiered, Colter’s team consisted of two handlers, Teddi (Robin Weigert) and Velma Bruin (Abby McEnany), along with Reenie, and Bobby (Eric Graise), Colter’s former tech guru. Throughout the first two seasons of the series, that cast was disassembled and repurposed, with Reenie the only surviving member of the original ensemble outside of Colter himself. While the team aspect of Tracker was always meant to be supportive and secondary, it needed to be rejigged before it could truly work for the series. Tracker season 2 saw Randy’s entrance, first as a temporary substitute for Bobby, then a permanent one.
Tracker season 3 saw Mel enter the picture, and now, her role has become more of a Colter-based one, as she’s assisting in keeping things running smoothly. Tracker season 4 has also broadened the scope to bring Adam into the mix, extending the show’s overall story to feature something that’s far more heavily about Reenie than it is about Colter. While Adam is currently only a function of Reenie’s story, it’s likely he’ll come into play in the bigger scope of the Tracker team at some point. The general team has been able to ground Tracker in a way that creates consistency, one of the key things it’s lacked.
Tracker Season 4’s Supporting Characters Sets Up A Longer Future For The Show

While the revamped team doesn’t make Colter any less important, having a larger ensemble of characters allows Tracker to invest in stories that go beyond its main character, who doesn’t always have roots. Featuring the larger team more consistently solidifies the way Tracker functions, which is essential for viewers of the show. With Colter always on the move, even when he’s not moving too far, having the core team in place allows the audience to understand what the show’s home base is, and how it helps move each story forward. With the support team having their own stories, now, too, Tracker can stretch out.
Tracker season 4’s cast changes create an opportunity to reach beyond the core issue the CBS series has been facing since the very beginning: that Colter is the center of every story, but rarely finds himself in stories with much longevity. The team, as it exists now, can now support their own storylines while Colter is on a case, allowing for the show to run multiple storylines with more ease. As the team branches out to feature characters who aren’t necessarily related to Colter directly, Tracker will be able to find ways to deepen its narratives and extend itself beyond its original scope.
