Trent McDuffie ranked among NFL's top corners in debut with Rams

Despite their overall defensive issues, the Los Angeles Rams saw an early return on one of their biggest offseason investments, as defensive back Trent McDuffie stood out among his peers. McDuffie, primarily a man corner, played in the Rams’ zone-heavy scheme, a strategy induced by the San Francisco 49ers’ offensive scheme.

McDuffie played well, and according to Pro Football Focus, his performance was so good that it ranked as the fourth-highest defensive grade and fourth-highest coverage grade for cornerbacks in Week 1.

McDuffie was able to achieve this while dealing with the travel to Melbourne, Australia, playing in a new scheme for the first time, Myles Garrett’s reduced effectiveness, and the challenges associated with a 49ers offense that added Mike Evans and regained Deebo Samuel.

As the Rams fine-tune their defense for the New York Giants – all without Garrett – McDuffie will be called upon to help in a big way. The good news is that Aaron Donald’s return could be imminent, and the team is playing on home soil this week.
