Trae Young reportedly declined his $49 million player option for the 2026-27 NBA season. He is expected to explore free agency and receive multiple max contract offers.
The star guard was traded to the Washington Wizards on Jan. 9. The team is the favorite to secure his services and become its cornerstone for years to come.

Young received backlash from fans on X. Many expressed shock that he declined a huge guaranteed amount, while others did not agree with his decision.

“Who tf is giving Trae Young a max contract?” a reaction read.
“Declined 49 mill ? Who is Trae Young agent,” one user wrote.
“Did Trae just fumble the bag,” posted another.
“Does he not want to win?? You can’t tell that roster can’t make a push with Trae ad sarr Tre Johnson and the 1st pick; if u change the wizards name to the Celtics we are all talking about a ecf or finals team when all healthy.,” a comment read.

Trae Young’s 2025-26 season
Young sustained a knee injury early in the season. On Oct. 31, doctors ruled him out for four weeks after diagnosing him with a sprained MCL. The four-time All-Star returned to action on Dec. 18 amid speculations about a potential move surrounding him.
The Atlanta Hawks traded him to Washington in exchange for CJ McCollum and Corey Kispert. Young played in five games for the Wizards, averaging 15.2 points, 3.0 rebounds, and 6.2 assists in 20.8 minutes. He suited up in only 15 matchups last season. The 27-year-old will look to bounce back in 2026 regardless of which team he plays for.
