Toto Wolff Praises Kimi Antonelli’s Ability to Learn and Adapt Quickly, Likens Him to an AI Agent

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has praised how quickly Kimi Antonelli has learned and grown in the sport, comparing him to an AI agent. The previous year marked Antonelli’s debut season in the sport, and he made mistakes expected of a rookie driver. Fast-forward to now, and you can see the 20-year-old winning races and leading the championship.

Last weekend’s Italian Grand Prix at Monza highlighted Antonelli’s capabilities, as he started from 19th on the grid due to a power unit penalty and won the race after a tight battle with his teammate George Russell. Antonelli leads the championship by 66 points over Russell.

Although his lead does not guarantee a championship victory at this stage of the F1 season, it does showcase his racing prowess. Wolff believed in him from the beginning and supported him even before he was confirmed as a Mercedes driver. Speaking about Antonelli’s journey thus far and the rapid growth that has positioned him to claim his maiden title, Wolff said:

“Last year was according to plan. I’ve said there are going to be moments of brilliance, difficult moments. I think he started the season at a time when he found himself like a deer in the headlights. In his zone, in the car, extraordinary performances already, but not continuous.

“Then he had this negative spell where he made over nine races without scoring points. I remember Spa was terrible for him and he was feeling down. Monza was the point where I, for the first time, said to him, ‘listen, you’ve got to wake up here’.

“But never doubting. That’s why we gave him the opportunity. And then he came out after the winter out of the blocks in a way that no one saw coming.”

F1 switched from ground effect cars to entirely new cars that derive nearly 47% of their power from electric energy. Drivers have had to change their driving styles significantly as a result. Despite the massive shift, Antonelli has been quick to adapt and stay ahead of the curve this season. Wolff added:

“The ability how he processed last year, he’s been at all the races, he’s seen the pressures of the the pressure of the media, the attention that he gets; it’s in a way that the system has been processed and saved. And that’s why, you know, the results that we have that we’ve seen afterwards.

“But it is still a surprise and amazing to see how quickly he develops. No, it’s like a for me, it’s like a like an AI agent that continuously self-improves and learns. That’s the speed, and and there also his his age is for sure beneficial with the ability cognitively, intellectually to to constantly become better.”
