Tony Stewart Returns to NASCAR for Talladega Truck Series Race

· · 2 min read

Tony Stewart is back behind the wheel of a NASCAR truck, giving racing fans another opportunity to watch one of the sport’s biggest legends compete on the track. Stewart is scheduled to compete in Friday’s NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race at Talladega Superspeedway, marking his second NASCAR start of the 2026 season.

The three-time NASCAR Cup Series champion will drive the No. 25 Ram 1500 for Kaulig Racing as part of Ram’s Free Agent Driver Program. The appearance continues Stewart’s involvement in Ram’s return to NASCAR competition and gives the team another opportunity to gain valuable experience at one of the sport’s most unpredictable tracks.

Stewart previously made his NASCAR return at Daytona International Speedway in February, driving the same truck in the season-opening event. His return to the sport attracted plenty of attention, as he had not competed in a NASCAR national series race since retiring from full-time competition after the 2016 season.

Stewart faces a major challenge at Talladega

Talladega presents a different challenge from most tracks on the NASCAR schedule. The 2.66-mile superspeedway is known for its high speeds, tight drafting packs and unpredictable finishes, meaning even experienced drivers must be prepared for anything once the green flag waves.

Stewart will start 29th in the 36-truck field, giving him plenty of ground to make up early in the race. Starting toward the back makes track position and avoiding trouble especially important, as one accident can quickly end a driver’s chances of competing for the victory.

Despite the challenge, Stewart has plenty of experience at Talladega. He earned a Cup Series victory at the track in 2008 and has recorded nine additional top-five finishes there in NASCAR’s premier series. His background in superspeedway racing could help him navigate the field and work with other drivers in the draft.

However, Stewart’s primary goal extends beyond simply chasing another trophy. His participation is also intended to help Kaulig Racing improve its superspeedway program while supporting Ram’s return to NASCAR. The information gathered during the race could benefit the organization as it continues developing its trucks and learning how to compete against established manufacturers.

The Love’s RV Stop 225 is scheduled for Friday, October 23, with coverage on FS1 beginning at 4 p.m. EST

For NASCAR fans, Stewart’s return is another reminder that even retired champions can find their way back to the driver’s seat. Although this appearance does not signal a full-time comeback, it gives fans a chance to see the Hall of Famer compete again and provides Kaulig Racing with an experienced driver for a demanding superspeedway event.

All eyes will be on the No. 25 Ram as Stewart looks to make the most of his opportunity at Talladega.
