Dallas Wings rookie guard Azzi Fudd, who has missed the team’s last five games with right knee soreness, has been declared out for the remainder of the season. The organization announced Wednesday that Fudd, the No. 1 overall pick in this year’s WNBA Draft, will undergo arthroscopic surgery to deal with the issue.
Fudd previously tore the ACL and meniscus in her right knee in 2023 and ACL and MCL in the same knee in 2019. Knee problems plagued her otherwise stellar college career, and now they’ve put a premature end to her first professional season.
Social media weighs in
Fans and media members expressed concern for Fudd, with some speculating that her 2026 workload, both college and pro, may have been too much to handle.
“This breaks my heart for her, she’s been through so much with her injuries,” one fan said.
“With news of AzziFudd missing the rest of the regular season, it begs the question if the workload was too much coming off a full NCAA season through to the Final Four,” suggested Mike Beauvais.
“My vote stands for AzziFudd to be on the WNBA All-Defensive team and All-Rookie team despite the fact that she will be out the remainder of the season. Thoughts?” said Winsidr’s Lily Boyd.
“I hate hearing this with any player. I hope she comes back strong. Work hard, don’t give up,” another fan added.
“Wings will make the post but one and done…they need her spot up shooting,” a third fan said.
A debut to dream on
Fudd appeared in 30 regular season games as a rookie, averaging 13.1 points, 1.7 rebounds, 1.8 assists, 1.7 steals and 0.8 blocks per game. She’s fourth among rookies in scoring and leads her draft class in 3-pointers made.
Known for her perimeter marksmanship coming out of UConn, Fudd became the first rookie to win the WNBA 3-point contest at the league’s All-Star Weekend last month.
While the Wings have taken criticism for choosing Fudd over TCU guard Olivia Miles, who is having a potential MVP season for the Minnesota Lynx, Fudd’s outside shooting and defensive ability should enable her to have a long, productive career in the W.
She just needs to stay healthy enough to make it happen.
