Enzo Fernandez says it is an “honour” to represent Argentina, and claims there is “something much bigger than a result”.
Ten-man Argentina were beaten 1-0 in the World Cup final by Spain, with Ferran Torres netting the winning goal in the second half of extra time.
Argentina were far from their best, managing just two off-target shots across 120 minutes, with their task made harder by Fernandez’s sending-off in the third minute of second-half stoppage time.
Fernandez became the sixth player to be sent off in a World Cup final, with 50% of those being Argentina players (also Pedro Monzon and Gustavo Dezotti in 1990).
But following the match, the 25-year-old, who had scored the equaliser against England in the semi-final to start Argentina’s comeback, believes being able to represent his country was the greatest honour.
“As time goes by, you understand that there’s something much bigger than a result,” Fernandez said on Instagram.
“For years, this group has represented us in the best way. They teach us that competing isn’t just about winning but about giving everything for the shirt and never giving up.
“Being part of this group that always showed its mettle, that competed at the highest level, and that defended these colours with pride, humility, and commitment is an honour.
“I want to thank all the Argentine fans. Thank you for always being there, for supporting us in every match, for your affection, your unconditional support, and for making us feel at home anywhere in the world.
“Wearing my country’s shirt is the greatest honour of my career, and I will continue to give my all every time I have the opportunity to defend it.”
Argentina have finished as runners-up at the World Cup for the fourth time (also 1930, 1990 and 2014), the joint-most of any side, along with Germany.
They also became the first team in the tournament’s history not to have a shot in 90 minutes of a World Cup final. Their first attempt came via Lionel Messi in the 117th minute.
