A hidden sci-fi gem returns with a new release in only two months. Science fiction is a large umbrella of subgenres with radically different approaches to speculative fiction. Some stories envision humanity spreading across the stars and waging wars over entire galaxies, while others are grounded in plausible scientific developments. Elsewhere, futuristic settings become a backdrop for stories about societies struggling to survive after civilization collapses, while the familiar concept of time travel can produce wildly different products, ranging from the personal to the multiversal. As a whole, sci-fi may be easy to identify, but each story can be one of a kind.
With sci-fi still dominating almost every medium of entertainment, 2027 seems like an exciting year for the genre. On the big screen, Godzilla x Kong: Supernova promises another massive Monsterverse confrontation; Star Wars: Starfighter brings a new adventure to a galaxy far, far away; and James Gunn’s Man of Tomorrow revisits the DC Universe. The most notable sci-fi event of the year promises to be Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Secret Wars, which aims to deliver the biggest Marvel movie to date. Other notable prospects include Apple TV’s Neuromancer and Amazon’s Blade Runner 2099, as well as the Star Trek: Shadow Frontier video game.
Beyond Marvel’s Star Wars / Marvel: Hope Assembles and DC’s Absolute Justice crossovers, some of the most anticipated sci-fi releases of 2027 include Image Comics’ The Territory, a dark dystopian series launching in January, alongside ongoing titles such as IDW’s Godzilla vs. Everything, and the continuation of BOOM!’s action-fueled Power Rangers Unlimited.

David Hine and Shaky Kane’s The Bulletproof Coffin follows Steve Newman, a door-to-door sales agent and comic book collector whose discovery of obscure Golden Nugget comics leads him down a disturbing rabbit hole filled with grotesque imagery and supernatural horrors, with science-fiction concepts blurring the lines between fictional worlds and reality. After its original 2011 release, The Bulletproof Coffin: Disinterred continued the story in 2012, followed by Bulletproof Coffin: The Thousand Yard Stare in 2017 and further related stories, including material in the 2021 one-shot Kane & Abel. Six years later, the upcoming 72-page Bulletproof Coffin: Giant! Cease to Exist is scheduled for release on January 12, 2027.
Bulletproof Coffin: Giant! Cease to Exist focuses on the fictional Golden Nugget Comics imprint, where the trillionaire cabal Sons of Technarchy play with reality. Hine and Kane themselves enter the fray, marking the duo’s first new The Bulletproof Coffin installment since 2021. Bulletproof Coffin: Giant! Cease to Exist is also the series’ debut at Oni Press, which plans to begin collecting the complete saga in 2028.

Oni Press’ 2027 science fiction lineup features ambitious cosmic stories and high-profile creator partnerships. Leading the charge is the highly anticipated maxi-series Citizen: Stardust from co-writers Dave Baker and Malachi Ward, scheduled for an April 2027 launch. Citizen: Stardust is a surrealist adventure that serves as a sci-fi reimagining of Fletcher Hanks’ iconic public domain superhero, Stardust the Super Wizard. Additionally, Eisner-nominated creator Christian Ward signed a massive multi-project deal with Oni Press for three brand-new original series debuting through 2027, following his sci-fi and horror fantasy world-building co-created with Sami Kivelä in The Forever Home.
After David Hine and Shaky Kane’s Bulletproof Coffin: Giant! Cease to Exist launches the publisher’s 2027 science fiction schedule, the continuation of speculative releases like Prometheus Graft: The Slayings at Death’s End and Matt Kindt’s cosmic mystery Mind MGMT will provide a very different type of sci-fi story. For readers who prefer their sci-fi mixed with classic anthology terror, the award-winning EC Comics revival lineup continues into the new year with Artists from the Abyss: Sami Kivelä, featuring sci-fi horror tales crafted by genre writers like Ben H. Winters, Chris Condon, and Greg Pak.
