Few fixtures in World Cup history have carried as much political weight as Iran vs USA, and with a possible rematch on the cards in 2026, memories of that night in 1998 are resurfacing.
Decades of tension lay in the background when the two teams met in Lyon. From the aftermath of the Iranian revolution and the US embassy hostage crisis to years without formal diplomatic ties, this was a fixture loaded with meaning before a ball was even kicked.
Players and coaches did their best to focus on the football, but the context was impossible to ignore. And it would be Iran to come out on top that night in Lyon.
Iran’s 2-1 win over USA at the 1998 World Cup
The match took place at Stade Gerland on June 21st 1998, with both teams already under pressure after losing their opening group games. Before kick-off, Iran’s players presented white roses to the US team as a symbol of peace, and the two sides posed together for a joint photograph.
It was a powerful image before a tense game. Iran then turned the moment into history, taking the lead through Hamid Estili before Mehdi Mahdavikia raced through to make it 2-0 in the second half.
The USA did pull one back through Brian McBride late on, but Iran held on to win 2-1. It was their first ever World Cup victory, and it sealed the Americans’ exit from the tournament.
The reaction in Iran was enormous. Thousands took to the streets in celebration, with the result carrying a meaning that went well beyond football.
Despite all the pressure around it, the match itself passed without the hostility many had feared. Former US defender Jeff Agoos later summed up the feeling by saying the teams had done more in 90 minutes than politicians had done in years.
Another meeting could be on the horizon in 2026, but in a far tenser political climate.
Iran are due to play two group games at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles this summer, first against New Zealand on June 15th, then Belgium on June 21st, before moving to Seattle to face Egypt on June 26th.
Those matches are already expected to be played under tight security, given the current conflict between the two nations. But there is also a scenario that could bring the USA and Iran together once again.
If both teams finish second in their respective groups, they would face each other in Texas on July 3rd. It would be only the third time the two nations have met since that night in Lyon, and at a time when political tension has never been higher.
