The Gentlemen Season 2's Shocking Character Death Promises A Very Different Season 3

The Gentlemen season 2 surprised audiences with myriad unexpected twists and turns, completely transforming Theo James’ Eddie physically, emotionally, and psychologically. With its stylized, fast-paced storytelling and compelling cast, Guy Ritchie’s black comedy drama has already surpassed its 2019 movie counterpart 16 episodes in. Each season keeps improving in scale, quality, and ratings. The series also helped Ritchie hit a new career high: The Gentlemen season 2 earned a solid 87% Rotten Tomatoes audience score, making it the filmmaker’s most well-received TV show to date.

Netflix’s hit Guy Ritchie show follows James’ Eddie Horniman, a former soldier who suddenly inherits the title of Duke along with his family’s entire ancestral estate. Soon after, he discovers that his inheritance actually comes with a massive underground cannabis farm. This sends him on a chaotic, life-altering journey filled with gangsters, blackmail, drugs, violence, and money, as the world of British aristocracy collides with London’s criminal underworld.

The Gentlemen season 2 begins with Eddie getting too comfortable in his place within the Glass family’s criminal empire, leading him to make more daring choices. However, Eddie’s ambitious goal of expanding the business internationally ultimately backfires after kingpin Bobby Glass (Ray Winstone) learns about his betrayal. Eddie narrowly survives Bobby’s brutal punishment, which leaves him severely injured and emotionally wrecked. While the incident served as a rude awakening for Eddie, it actually made him more fearless and determined to rise to the top of the food chain on his own terms.

The true catalyst for Eddie’s descent into darkness happens during The Gentlemen season 2 finale, when his wife Bella (Benedetta Porcaroli) shockingly dies in a plane explosion. This tragedy not only turns Eddie into a vengeful, ruthless killer, but also directly changes the dynamics of the show’s most important relationship.

Bella’s Death Resets Eddie & Susie’s Relationship In The Gentlemen Season 3

So far, the partnership between Eddie Horniman and Susie Glass (Kaya Scodelario) has been The Gentlemen‘s central pillar. In season 1, Susie becomes Eddie’s guide through the high-stakes world of British criminal syndicates, which involves learning how to launder money and negotiate dangerous deals. Eddie and Susie eventually become loyal allies as they keep fixing the chaotic messes their families create. They earned each other’s respect, with Susie recognizing Eddie’s strategic genius and valuable connections as an aristocrat. Meanwhile, Eddie admires Susie’s competence, rationality, and sharp instincts.

In season 2, their dynamic changed from mentor-mentee to co-captains with the shared goal of expanding their criminal operations globally. However, when Bobby punishes Eddie for his deception, his partnership with Susie fractures. This pushes Eddie closer to the Italian Mafia, which embraces him because of his romance with Bella, the goddaughter of mob boss Marco Moretti (Sergio Castellitto). After his near-death experience, Bella became Eddie’s saving grace and anchor, helping him overcome his trauma. That’s why her surprising death served as the final push that drove Eddie to let go of the remaining humanity he had left.

At the end of season 2, Eddie becomes aggressive and erratic after Bella’s death, leading him to the point of even considering killing Susie after he suspected Bobby’s role in the tragedy. While Susie eventually proved the Glass family’s innocence in Bella’s murder, it still massively shifted the dynamic between her and Eddie, with the former visibly worried about the Duke’s unpredictability.

While it’s expected the two will resume their business alliance, The Gentlemen season 3 will most likely feature Susie acting more cautiously around Eddie’s new volatile persona. Now that Susie has witnessed what Eddie’s trauma and grief have turned him into, she is at a loss as to how she’ll navigate a fragile partnership with someone who’s beyond her control, but at the same time, she still cares about. It remains to be seen whether this new tension will push them farther apart, or whether the danger somehow pulls them closer.

The Gentlemen Season 3 Welcomes A Bigger Cast After Key Character Exit

Beyond Eddie and Susie’s evolving relationship, season 3 also faces another major change: Daniel Ings officially exiting The Gentlemen‘s main cast. For two seasons, Ings played Freddy, Eddie’s irresponsible older brother. The season 2 finale ended with the revelation of Freddy’s ultimate betrayal against his brother and family. Under the manipulation of Gospel John (Pearce Quigley), Freddy played a significant role in Bella’s death and the attempted kidnapping of his nephew. Instead of killing him, Eddie resorted to a much more psychological punishment by forcing Freddy to kill Gospel John with a chainsaw.

At the moment, it’s unclear how The Gentlemen season 3 will address Ings’ exit. However, the show’s new wave of cast additions will fill this unexpected void. Joining James and Scodelario are The Lord of the Rings vets Elijah Wood and Orlando Bloom in their first TV collaboration. The next installment will also introduce Robert Carlyle, Dexter Fletcher, Bruna Marquezine, Ed Speleers, Saffron Burrows, Philip Arditti, and Bugzy Malone.
