The Game Of Thrones Franchise Is Officially Replacing Jon Snow In 2027

While it’s been almost a decade at this point, Jon Snow’s fate in HBO’s Game of Thrones still feels completely underwhelming for many fans of George R.R. Martin’s universe. Unfortunately, there’s no telling when we might get a better sense of where his canonical storyline is headed in the books, seeing as The Winds of Winter has no definitive release window and many fans have already accepted that the conclusion, A Dream of Spring, may never actually happen.

Throughout the HBO series, Jon Snow was positioned as one of the most important characters in Westeros, from his mysterious Targaryen heritage to his longstanding conflict with the White Walkers. Yet, despite everything he accomplished, his story ended with exile beyond the Wall, leaving many viewers desperate for a more satisfying conclusion.

Fortunately, Game of Thrones is getting another major release in 2027 that could not only rewrite Jon Snow’s ending, but will also replace the character altogether as the main focus of the story.

Game Of Thrones Switches Main Characters In 2027

Jon Snow might have been one of the central protagonists of HBO’s Game of Thrones, but when the franchise officially returns in early 2027, he’ll be taking a back seat to an entirely different protagonist. Developed by PlaySide Studios, Game of Thrones: War for Westeros is an upcoming real-time strategy game that effectively replaces Jon as the driving force behind the story, allowing players to determine the fate of the Seven Kingdoms themselves.

In War for Westeros, players can command one of four major factions, including House Stark, House Lannister, House Targaryen, and the White Walkers. The game features a sandbox-style single-player campaign where players can conquer territories, command armies, and rewrite some of the most consequential events from the HBO series. Most importantly, players will ultimately decide which faction wins the war and which hero claims the Iron Throne, potentially giving Westeros an entirely different ending.

Of course, Jon Snow isn’t disappearing completely. He’s confirmed as one of several playable heroes, alongside Robb Stark, Daenerys Targaryen, Jaime Lannister, Arya Stark, and the Night King. Jon will retain his battlefield leadership abilities, rallying nearby troops and helping turn battles in his faction’s favor.

Originally expected in 2026, War for Westeros is now scheduled for an early 2027 release on PC through Steam. While it won’t officially rewrite the show’s established canon, it offers something many fans have wanted since the divisive finale: an opportunity to decide how the battle for Westeros should have ended.

One of the most exciting aspects of War for Westeros is that it isn’t interested in simply recreating the events of HBO’s original series. Instead, the game gives players the freedom to rewrite the history of Westeros, potentially creating a completely different conclusion to the War of the Five Kings and the larger struggle for the Iron Throne.

For instance, players could lead House Stark to victory, giving the family a much more triumphant ending than the one depicted throughout the series. Alternatively, House Lannister could emerge victorious, Daenerys could successfully conquer Westeros, or the White Walkers could overwhelm the armies and get the devastating victory the Night King never managed in the show.

According to game director Ryan McMahon, the campaign isn’t restricted to a specific season or point in the Game of Thrones timeline. Characters and factions from across the series are brought together, with players determining which alliances form and which characters survive.

Consequently, the game’s ending could look completely different with every playthrough, allowing fans to explore countless alternate outcomes. While none of these scenarios will change the official Game of Thrones canon, War for Westeros could finally give players the satisfaction of seeing their favorite characters achieve the victories they were denied on screen.
