The Athletic names QB C.J. Stroud as Texans' most under-pressure player in 2026

Who faces the most pressure in 2026 for the Houston Texans?

There’s an obvious answer, but The Athletic dove a bit deeper.

The website listed all 32 teams’ most under-pressure players in 2026, including names such as Jacksonville‘s Brian Thomas Jr., Minnesota‘s Kyler Murray, and Tampa Bay‘s Baker Mayfield. For the Texans, quarterback C.J. Stroud wasn’t just the logical pick, but also the only selection.

“The Texans made Stroud the second pick of the 2023 draft, and he has helped his team reach the playoffs in each of the last three seasons,” Mike Jones wrote. “However, he has yet to help them get over the hump, and pressure continues to mount. Last season, the Texans had a championship-caliber defense, but Stroud’s postseason struggles cost the team a chance to advance to the AFC Championship Game, and possibly the Super Bowl. While Houston did pick up Stroud’s fifth-year option this spring, the lack of playoff success has given the Texans pause in awarding the quarterback a long-term contract extension. Instead, they’re taking a wait-and-see approach. The Texans need to see more from him before committing for the long term and making him one of the highest-paid players in the NFL. If Stroud can finally take his team on a deep postseason run, he could quiet all of the doubts about his future.”

It’s fair to criticize the fourth-year quarterback who currently is looking for a contract extension from the Texans. On one hand, Stroud cut down on the turnovers last season and upped his completion percentage to 64.5 percent. On the other hand, he did finish with just 19 touchdowns and threw for a career-low 3,041 yards.

Stroud missed three games due to a concussion, but the Texans didn’t miss a beat with him gone. While Davis Mills shouldn’t be considered a full-time signal-caller, he did guide Houston to a 3-0 record and started the nine-game winning streak that propelled the AFC South franchise into the playoffs.

Seven interceptions in two playoff games, however, will be what most people remember him for last season. That can’t happen again if Houston views itself as a legit contender for a division title.
