It’s been a rough 2026 for Texas Tech.
It started with getting unceremoniously dumped out of the College Football Playoff 23-0 by Oregon. But everything was gearing back up for another great season, starting by landing star quarterback Brendan Sorsby from the transfer portal. That didn’t exactly work out as planned.
Now the football season gets going with a light and breezy non-conference run, or so it seems. Abilene Christian was fantastic in the 2024 season opener, a 52-51 Red Raiders win.

No, it wasn’t a great performance against Lamar, but the Wildcat defense wasn’t bad, and the passing game had a few nice moments. This isn’t the team of two years ago, but Abilene Christian will spread the ball around to a good group of receivers. The offensive line held up last week – Lamar wasn’t able to generate any pressure.
That limiting the defensive pressure thing is going to stop in a big hurry for Abilene Christian.
Texas Tech might not have another David Bailey, but Trey White (San Diego State) and Adam Trick (Northern Illinois) are two outstanding signings for the outside. The defenisve front will turn out to be every bit as nasty as last year’s version.
All eyes will be on quarterback Will Hammond. The program signed Tommy Castellanos, who spent time at Florida State and Boston College, but Hammond has the skills and experience to make the offense his. There won’t be any problems moving the ball in a dominant Red Raider performance.
