Victor Wembanyama is widely regarded as one of the frontrunners for the Most Valuable Player award in the 2026-27 NBA season. After finishing third in the 2025-26 race, he is ready to leapfrog the other two.

Of course, Wembanyama has cemented his place as one of the best players in the league. However, he is not getting too caught up in the award race because he wants to lead the San Antonio Spurs to glory.

Victor Wembanyama has a goal to win MVP and succeed with the Spurs

It is normal to have high expectations for one of the league’s most impressive players. At 7’5″, Wembanyama is one of the most imposing players in the league, but he pairs that with an impressive skill set on both ends of the floor.

People have gotten to see how dominant he could be during the first three years of his career. He even managed to lead the Spurs to the NBA Finals in their first postseason run as a core group. Now, the expectations are sky-high for both Wemby and his team ahead of his fourth NBA season.

MVP is a definite possibility for the Frenchman in the 2026-27 season. However, he has some stiff competition, with Shai Gilgeous-Alexander looking to win his third consecutive MVP, but Nikola Jokic is still playing at an elite level as well.

“It’s a big goal this year, but coming off a Finals loss, it’s not the first thing on my mind… It wasn’t really a surprise. I think it was close; everyone at the top of that race could have made their own case, but Jokic and Shai each had more arguments than I did,” Wembanyama said about the MVP award and his goals for the 2026-27 season.

It will certainly be a tough season for the Spurs because they now have huge targets on their backs. The MVP and Defensive Player of the Year awards would be nice, but Wembanyama will be mostly focused on helping the Spurs win games and carve out a path to the Finals again.
