Texas Longhorns injury list estimated at $10M dollar NIL value

It’s a salary cap world now in college football. Each player has a price-tag associated with him in the NIL era and when a player is out, it hurts the overall NIL budget. Texas has almost $10 million dollars worth of NIL capital on the official SEC Injury Report. Some, like running back Hollywood Smothers, are lost for the rest of the season.

Texas announced this week Smothers was out for the year after suffering a shoulder and knee injury against Mississippi State. Offensive tackle Trevor Goosby was lost for the season a couple of weeks ago. Now Tight End Nick Townsend out for the season as well. Edge Richard Wesley has been out for weeks.

Wide receivers Ryan Wingo and Cam Coleman are listed as questionable after getting banged up last week. Defensive backs Kade Phillips and Graceson Littleton are also questionable. EDGE Colin Simmons is currently listed as questionable. The All-American has missed three games.

That’s a lot of big names on the list. Coleman and Smothers are both big signings from the NCAA Transfer Portal. Goosby and Simmons are forecast to be a top ten pick in the 2027 NFL Draft. Where Goosby plays next season is up in the air right now.

In today’s NIL paradigm, it also means Texas has spent a lot of NIL capital that is going unused. It’s dead NIL funds.

OrangeBloods owner Geoff Ketchum, who has covered Longhorns football for decades, believes there is $10 million dollars in NIL money tied to the Longhorns Injury list.

Ooooooh./ Good question.

10 Million.

Smithers – $750K
Goosby – 1.5
Townsend – $250
Wesley – 750K
Simmons – 1.8
Wingo – $750K
Coleman – 2
Phillips – $750K
Littleton – 1 https://t.co/nRmdUa2mV4

Ketchum estimates there four players on the list making $1 million dollars or more this season. Ketch believes four players on the injury report are making $750 thousand dollars this year.

Steve Sarkisian talked about treating a programs NIL budget as a salary cap. If you want to sign a Cam Coleman at wide receiver, you might need to let Parker Livingstone walk. That $10 million is a lot of NIL capital lost.

The NFL has dealt with dead injury cap money for years now. But the big advantage pro teams have over college midseason maneuvering. If an NFL team has a big injury, they can trade for a replacement. They can move cap money around. They have access to the entire league’s practice squad.

Steve Sarkisian doesn’t have that luxury. The Longhorns will have to figure it out with what they have got on the roster.
