Teddy Bridgewater Steps Away From the NFL Again

Teddy Bridgewater is stepping away from the NFL once again, bringing another chapter of his unique football career to a close.

Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell announced Sunday that Bridgewater is leaving the team and is expected to retire from football. The 33-year-old quarterback had returned to Detroit after spending the 2025 season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Bridgewater’s decision marks the second time in three years that he has stepped away from professional football. After the 2023 season, Bridgewater announced his retirement and turned his attention toward coaching. He returned to his hometown and became the head coach at Miami Northwestern High School, his former school.

The transition was a success. Bridgewater led Miami Northwestern to a state championship, adding another accomplishment to a career that had already included plenty of highs and lows.

However, retirement did not last.

Bridgewater eventually returned to the NFL and made his way back to the Lions, where he served as a veteran backup and mentor behind starting quarterback Jared Goff. His experience made him a valuable presence in Detroit’s quarterback room.

Now, Bridgewater is stepping away again.

Over 11 NFL seasons, Bridgewater appeared in 83 games and made 65 starts. He completed 66.3% of his passes for 15,182 yards, 75 touchdowns and 47 interceptions.

His career has been defined by perseverance. After being selected by the Minnesota Vikings in the first round of the 2014 NFL Draft, Bridgewater quickly showed promise as a young starter. His career took a major setback in 2016 when he suffered a devastating knee injury during the preseason.

Many wondered whether Bridgewater would ever return to his previous form. Instead, he fought his way back and continued his career with the New Orleans Saints, Carolina Panthers, Denver Broncos, Miami Dolphins, Detroit Lions and Buccaneers.

Although he never permanently regained a starting role, Bridgewater became respected around the league for his leadership, preparation and professionalism.

The Lions now have to adjust their quarterback depth following his departure. Detroit has added veteran Josh Dobbs to help fill the void behind Goff.

The biggest question now is whether Bridgewater’s latest retirement will actually be his final one. He has already proven once that walking away from football does not necessarily mean the end.

For now, though, Bridgewater appears ready to close the book on his NFL playing career.

From first round draft pick to veteran backup, high school coach and state champion, his football journey has been anything but ordinary.

Whatever comes next, Bridgewater leaves the NFL with a career built not only on statistics, but on resilience and the ability to keep finding his way back to the game he loves.
