Taylor Sheridan’s Tulsa King Season 4 Officially Resets Its Story

· · 4 min read

The newest episode of Taylor Sheridan’s and Sylvester Stallone’s Tulsa King has completely reset the story of Dwight Manfredi. After the bloody premiere of Tulsa King season 4, which saw both Margaret Devereaux and Cal Thresher die in a plane crash, episode 2 slowed down quite a bit. This week’s episode focused more on the fallout of the plane crash, Dwight’s grief, and a few new plot lines for the gang to explore, like Tyson’s ill-fated attempt to get into the ecstasy business.

Though this week’s episode was mostly building up for the future, there was one big reveal hidden in plain sight. That reveal officially confirmed that the story of Tulsa King season 4 is in for a big story reset, one that will put Dwight and the entire cast of Tulsa King on the back foot. Dwight and the gang are being hunted down by the only threat bigger than themselves: the Oklahoma government.

Dwight’s Entire Operation Is Getting Shut Down By Oklahoma’s New Governor

Episode 2 of Tulsa King season 4 saw Cal Thresher’s lieutenant governor, Amanda Clark (Gretchen Mol) take his place after his death. Now holding the highest seat in the Oklahoma state government, Clark has set her sights on none other than Dwight Manfredi and his gang. Clark mentioned several times that she hates Dwight, believes he’s “getting fat off the state of Oklahoma,” and even refused to shake his hand in the premiere, and now she’s decided to make it his problem.

Most importantly, Clark told Attorney General Sackrider to revoke Dwight’s liquor license. While it was only a single line, that command has huge implications for Dwight and the gang. Without a liquor license, they won’t be able to operate the Bred2Buck, one of their main sources of income, and they won’t be able to distribute any of the bourbon from Montague Distillery. Dwight has huge plans for the Montague 50, and Governor Clark just threw a massive wrench in them.

Revoking his liquor license may also be just the start of Clark’s plans to sabotage Dwight. She can do a lot of damage as the governor of Oklahoma, even beyond revoking his liquor license on a whim. Clark can order her subordinates to target all of Dwight’s industries and take a much closer look at all his dealings. While the gang has been trying to go legit, there are still plenty of ways they’ve been bending and breaking the law that Clark can exploit. For example, Mitch just committed mass insurance fraud by torching all the cars at the dealership; Clark can rake him over the coals for that.

Those are just the legal options Clark has at her disposal. She could also have law enforcement harass Dwight and the other members of the gang, she can trump up fake charges and violations to fine them and seize assets, and she can drag his name through the mud in the court of public opinion. Tulsa King season 4, episode 2 didn’t do a great job of showing it, but Governor Clark may be the most dangerous villain Dwight has ever faced.

Dwight And The Gang Are Back To Being Underdogs Once Again

Governor Clark’s plan to revoke Dwight’s liquor license and, presumably, go after the rest of his semi-legitimate empire marks a major reset for Tulsa King as a whole. At the start of this season, Dwight was on top of the world. The Montague 50 was set to make him millions, most of his businesses were well on the way to becoming completely legit, and he even made progress with Quiet Ray in New York. On the personal side, his relationship with Margaret had never been stronger.

Tulsa King Season 4 Release Schedule

Release Date (Fridays @ 3 a.m. ET on Paramount+)

Now, just two episodes into Tulsa King season 4, Dwight and the gang are back to being underdogs. Clark and the government are treating them like common criminals again, all of Dwight’s moneymaking schemes are under threat, Quiet Ray is trying to take a piece of Dwight’s empire, and Margaret is dead. This glittering empire and cozy personal life Dwight has built over the course of three seasons is coming crashing down. They’re back at square one, both narratively and logistically speaking, marking a major reset for Tulsa King as a whole.

This kind of massive reset isn’t, however, anything new for the show. In fact, it’s one of the show’s biggest problems, one that has already drawn criticism in reviews for Tulsa King season 4. Every season, Dwight and the gang face some kind of major setback that wipes away all their progress from the previous season. Characters like Stacy Beale or Tina Manfredi are written off and forgotten about, scams like the wind farm or the car dealership are ignored, and every season makes Dwight an underdog yet again. It’s par for the course with Tulsa King. Dwight has to be the underdog, even if that means resetting the entire show with each season.
